Stella admits to Sepang strategy blunder: ‘A single miscalculation’

For McLaren team boss Andrea Stella, last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix was a harsh reminder that Formula 1 is a game of fine margins, where a single split-second gamble can elevate a team to glory or send them tumbling down the order.

For team papaya, a risky opening tyre strategy at Sepang backfired spectacularly, turning a promising starting position for Lando Norris into an uphill battle from the rear of the field before the opening lap was even completed.

Rather than offering defensive platitudes, McLaren’s Stella offered an refreshingly honest assessment of the pit wall's misstep, laying bare the precise chain of logic that led the Woking-based team astray.

The pit wall's staring contest with the rain

When the grid formed under uncertain Sepang skies, rival outfits like Red Bull and Mercedes played it safe on Pirelli’s intermediate rubber, but McLaren opted for medium slick tyres for both Norris and Oscar Piastri.

The rationale seemed sound on paper: Sepang’s unique, high-abrasion asphalt typically generates swift heat, and the team anticipated the crossover point to dry conditions would arrive almost immediately.

Instead, the damp track refused to cooperate. Piastri cut his losses by diving into the pits at the end of the formation lap to swap for inters, while Norris soldiered on, slipping and sliding as he tried in vain to extract grip from a slick tyre that simply would not light up.

Addressing the early chaos candidly, Stella pointed to those agonizing opening moments as the defining hurdle of the afternoon:

"Well, at the pit wall, not in terms of making calls, strategy and tyres, the most difficult moment was certainly at the start where it was unclear whether the track was requiring intermediate tyres or it wouldn't work for the dry tyres," Stella told the media.

    Anatomy of a miscalculation

With high tyre degradation expected to create plenty of strategic variance throughout the Grand Prix, McLaren’s initial roll of the dice effectively put both drivers on the back foot from Turn 1.

Stella broke down the exact data points that misled the pit wall during the reconnaissance laps prior to lights out.

"On this kind of car already, what we saw on the laps to the grid is that the intermediate tyres were getting damaged very very rapidly,” he explained.

“And also on this kind of tarmac the dry tyres work very, very easily, much more easily than pretty much every other circuit.

"So it looked from what we could observe that the track was drying up to stay on track with the dry tyres and we thought that the dry tyres would have switched on pretty rapidly.

“But as a matter of fact it took more laps than we thought. So with Lando we lost race time and with Oscar as well we lost race time because we needed to pit and accept that the track was only right for intermediate tyres."

Once the team accepted reality and transitioned both cars onto the proper rubber, the rest of the race settled into a familiar routine. Yet, as Stella acknowledged, the damage had already been done during those crucial opening minutes:

"This was the most complicated moment. After that I think it was even if there were safety cars and some decisions to be made as to which compound but I think apart from this initial decision the rest was really easier,” the Italian concluded.
