The Diamond Heels broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 7-3 win against Pittsburgh at Boshamer Stadium Sunday. The win finished off a three-game sweep of the Panthers, UNC’s first at home in ACC play.

UNC had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on the strength of a two-RBI single from Macon Winslow, but a Pitt sacrifice fly in the second and solo home run in the fourth off starter Folger Boaz evened the score.
Carolina’s winning rally in the sixth started after a leadoff walk from Cooper Nicholson, who then took second base on a sacrifice bunt. The small ball paid off as Nicholson came home on an RBI single from Colin Hynek in the next at-bat. Hynek himself advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Carter French, went to third after back-to-back walks and then trotted home after Gavin Gallaher drew the fourth free pass of the inning.
UNC added two more runs in the seventh, again thanks to Hynek on a two-RBI single. With Carolina leading 6-2 in the top of the eighth, Pitt mounted its biggest threat of the day when the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs against Caden Glauber. Walker McDuffie relieved the true freshman and ended the inning with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.

UNC’s pitchers combined to strand 10 Pittsburgh runners, including five across the game’s final two innings. Glauber earned his seventh win of the season with 3.1 innings of relief, though he did walk five batters. Rose, who recorded the game’s final out, was credited with his first save.
The Diamond Heels are now 40-9-1 overall and 20-7 in ACC play this season, having won four consecutive games. This marks the third straight year UNC has won at least 40 games in a season and second time in the last three years the Diamond Heels have won at least 20 conference games. Sunday’s win was the final home game of the regular season for UNC, though the team is likely to be named at least a regional host in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Carolina closes the season with four consecutive road games, the first of which sees it travel to UNC-Wilmington Tuesday at 6 p.m.
