El Segundo — 202 La Canada — 192 Millikan — 155The El Segundo girls team won two individual events and two relays to earn the overall title by just 10 points over La Canada with the whole meet coming down to the last relay and three hundredths of a second.
The first event winner for either team came in the girls 200 freestyle when La Canada senior Meredith O’Grady swam 1:47.79 to earn the win by half-a-second over El Segundo senior, and future UCLA teammate Sora Koike‘s 1:48.22.
This swim was a massive personal best for O’Grady, taking a second off the 1:48.63 mark she set at this meet last year. Koike added a bit from her best of 1:47.83, which she swam in February.
O’Grady went on to also swim the top time in the 100 freestyle, touching in 50.27 to just miss her lifetime best 50.20 from April.
In the 200 IM, El Segundo bounced back with a win from sophomore Eryn Arnold. The 16-year-old swam 1:59.77 in the 200 IM, dropping under 2:00 for the first time in her career and taking a second off her previous best of 2:00.56, which she swam at Winter Juniors in December.
Arnold also won the 100 fly, swimming 53.25 to come in a full second ahead of 2nd place finisher Bianca Nwaizu‘s 54.35. This was another new personal best for Arnold, who came in with a best of 53.82 from Winter Juniors.
El Segundo also won the girls’ 200 freestyle relay with the team of Sora Koike (22.86), Eryn Arnold (23.19), Ava Bao (24.41), and Paige Hale (25.25) swimming 1:35.71 to touch two seconds ahead of the La Canada ‘A’ team.
Going into the final event, the El Segundo girls team was just four points ahead of La Canada, so the whole meet came down to which team took home the trophy in the 400 freestyle relay.
The future UCLA teammates in O’Grady and Koike led off for La Canada and El Segundo respectively. O’Grady swam a personal best 49.92, dipping under 50 seconds for the first time to put La Canada in the lead. Koike touched in 50.30, which exactly tied her lifetime best time from November. This put the El Segundo girls just four tenths back.
On the 2nd leg, Arnold swam for El Segundo, splitting a monster 50.32 to pull the team four seconds ahead of La Canada, who had Natalee Yun split 54.76.
Ava Bao split 53.41 on the 3rd leg for El Segundo while Lilli Perner was 52.88 for La Canada, starting to chip away at the other team’s lead.
The anchor legs saw Paige Hale swim for El Segundo, splitting 54.81 to just barely hold off La Canada senior Mia Bugarin, who swam 51.31. This win gave El Segundo the overall meet title.
