No team in the NFL has more retired numbers than the Chicago Bears, which helps explain why rookie center Logan Jones opened the team’s rookie minicamp wearing No. 54 — a number synonymous with Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher.
Wearing a team legend’s number comes with great responsibility. After all, no one wants to be a player whose performance disgraces a number that is highly thought of in Bears history. And for what it’s worth, it sounds like Jones is honored by the opportunity:

However, Logan Jones is about to become the first Bears player to wear No. 54 since Urlacher retired after the 2012 season. This is a notable development. And a reminder that the rookie taking on that number has a lot to live up to now that he is in camp.
Bears give Logan Jones and his rookie teammates new numbers
In addition to Logan Jones wearing No. 54, the Bears announced numbers for other rookies:

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 8, 2026Of course, this is subject to change. I recall Luther Burden III wearing multiple numbers during the offseason before settling in with No. 10 ahead of the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. That seems to have worked out well for everyone.
Chicago Bears rookie center Logan Jones has big shoes to fill when he puts on the No. 54 jersey once worn proudly by Brian Urlacher. The Hall of Fame linebacker played his entire career with the Bears, racking up tackles, interceptions, forced fumbles, and accolades that ultimately led him to become a first-ballot Hall of Famer in a class that also included linebacker legend Ray Lewis. With that being said, I’m looking forward to seeing how Jones carves out his own career while wearing that number.
Jones was one of my favorite pick-ups from the Bears’ 2026 NFL Draft class. Finding a long-term center option was high on my list of things I was hoping Chicago’s front office would do on NFL Draft weekend. And while I did not expect them to use the first of their Day 2 picks on Logan Jones, I’m not going to complain about bringing in an offensive lineman from the University of Iowa — a school that churns out pro-caliber NFL lineman annually — who earned All-American honors and could start as early as Week 1 for this team.
I love what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson had to say about the possibility of Logan Jones starting in Week 1.
“Time will tell,” Johnson said when asked how quickly Jones can be ready to take on a starting role. “The ball’s in his court as far as I’m concerned. He understands that, just like everyone else, we’re looking to create competition. Consistency, day after day, and building trust – not only with Caleb and the other quarterbacks — but within that offensive line room and then obviously with the coaching staff. It’s just a matter of time to build trust.”

This isn’t just a Logan Jones thing. Again, no team has more retired uniform numbers than the Bears — a team that has been playing with the pigskin since 1920. It makes sense that a team with a long and storied history like the Bears has maxed out on retired numbers. But with that in mind, it is probably time to rethink some things on that front.
This is what I said when discussing the topic last year when Luther Burden III couldn’t wear No. 3, which is retired in honor of Bronco Nagurski:
Perhaps the team will reconsider its retired number policy. Maybe the Bears need a Ring of Honor that will appropriately honor the team’s legends while not limiting the number of numbers in circulation. It could be time for the Bears to unretire some numbers. Heck, I’m open to numbers staying retired, and players who deserve them get to wear them. Imagine if No. 50 was given out to only star linebackers. No. 95 isn’t retired, but what if it was handed out to players deemed worthy of wearing the number worn by Super Bowl XX MVP and Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent?
In the end, I wonder if there will come a time when the Bears seriously consider putting some numbers back into circulation for players. Preseason rosters are expansive right now, and I feel we could get roster expansion if the league successfully pushes through an 18-game schedule. If that is how the cookie crumbles and the NFL adds more roster spots, the Bears (and other teams around the NFL in similar situations) might have to make some changes.
With all due respect to the legends of yesteryear, it might be time to give some of those numbers an opportunity to see the light of day. Maybe there should be a limit on how long a number can be retired or taken out of commission. I don’t think there is a perfect answer. But I’m sure the powers that be can figure something out that pleases everyone.
