PACIFIC BEACH – Mission Bay High School Para athlete Chris Adamson has committed to San Diego State University’s Adapted Athletics Program as a T11 (totally blind) athlete.Adamson, with his Para educator and guide runner David Cervantes, has been part of Mission Bay’s track team since ninth grade – participating in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and shot put.Last summer, while participating in the Nike Outdoor Invitational Meet in June, Adamson set a national record in the 100-meter and 200-meter events.“Chris’s performance in Eugene was nothing short of extraordinary,” said Danny Perez, Mission Bay track and field coach. “As a T11 athlete, winning the 100-meter Ambulatory Division at the Nike Outdoor Nationals speaks volumes about his work ethic, mental toughness, and determination.“To set a U20 national record is impressive – and it’s only the beginning. Chris has shown the country what we’ve always known: He’s elite,” Perez said.Adamson earned an All-America designation for winning his event at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. While Adamson is still awaiting information on his housing and schedule of classes for the fall semester, he is no stranger to the campus. He recently spoke at a fundraiser hosted by the Delta Gamma Sorority on April 26.Accompanied by his guide runner, Cervantes, and AJ Muñoz-Bond, director of Adapted Athletics at SDSU, Adamson spoke of his journey as a blind runner starting as a freshman at Mission Bay High.He talked about his initial decision to go out for track and asked his special education aide, Cervantes, if he would also try to be his guide runner. Perhaps a little clumsy at first, they both learned their roles as a young blind runner tethered to a guide runner.“Delta Gamma is one of just nine College Panhellenic Association sororities on campus,” said Emily Cruz, Delta Gamma Sorority president. “All nine have their respective philanthropy missions.“Our chapter’s philanthropy is Service for Sight and aims to support the blind and visually impaired community,” Cruz said. “We were inspired by Chris’ journey as a totally blind runner. We wanted to meet Chris and are excited to have him starting his college track career at SDSU.” While his track training starts later in the summer, Adamson is planning to start mobility and orientation training on the SDSU campus in May.Muñoz-Bond added, “We’re excited for Chris to join us this fall as a student athlete in our Adapted Athletics Program. This fall, we will have Para track and field and wheelchair tennis officially offered as part of our program.”
