The Chicago area woke up to a cold Thursday morning, with temperatures as low as 29 degrees in some parts and a frost advisory in place.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the temperatures are “unseasonably” chilly for May. Through 8 a.m., a frost advisory remained in effect for all counties in the Chicago area, except for Cook.
“Temperatures as low as the lower 30s will result in some areas of frost early this morning,” the NWS said.
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, high temperatures Thursday will rise into the low 60s, with some scattered showers possible. Overnight and into early Friday morning, some isolated thunderstorms could form, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.
“Not everyone will see it,” Roman said, of the rain.
Temperatures Friday will be milder, with highs in the mid-60s but cooler along the lake. Saturday, temperatures will hit 75 degrees, but drop back down into the low 60s again Sunday.
When will it start to feel like May?
Thursday’s frost advisory should be the last of the season, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, though Monday could remain cold.
By the end of next week however, “we’re going to finally get the consistent spring weather we’ve been waiting for,” Jeanes said. The latest temperature outlook map from the Climate Prediction Center shows the Chicago area “leaning above” average temperatures for Mid-May.
“We should reach the 70s by Thursday or Friday,” Jeanes said, of what to expect next week. Once that pattern hits, the area will remain in the 70s and 80s for multiple days.
“The warm pattern is going to feel great, but keep in mind its going to come with storm chances as we head to the end of May and beginning of June. ”
Average last freeze
Chicago in 2025 saw its last freeze of the season April 8, but the latest on record came in 1992 on May 25, Jeanes said.
The average last freeze for the area typically comes in late April for most parts. Here’s a look at the 30-year average last freeze dates, from the NBC 5 Storm Team:
