Sodus Bay prepares for rising Lake Ontario water levels

SODUS POINT, N.Y. — The owner of a local marina said Lake Ontario water levels have risen quickly this season and could continue climbing into early summer. Philip Leone, who owns a marina in Sodus Bay, said the levels came up fast before stabilizing in the last week.

Leone said The Army Corps of Engineers is calling for four more inches of rise over the course of May, with the crest typically occurring around mid-June, he said.

“I’ve seen reports where they may rise into July or to the first of July,” Leone said. “Once we hit 247, the old-timers always said it’ll shoot up from there.” The International Joint Commission is reporting the water could stay near current levels or rise another nine-tenths of a foot.

Leone said his marina has floating docks and reinforced seawalls, making it more resilient than properties with fixed docks. “My bay customers, where we install their seasonal docks and boat hoists, a lot of them don’t have enough legs on their docks that we can put them in,” Leone said.

“They won’t be far enough out of the water, so the waves will wash them away.”

Sodus Point Mayor, Pat Nolan, is leading the response in his first term. Leone said the mayor previously served as a trustee in the Village of Palmyra for 13 years.

“He’s out there working every day, working hard at it and, you know, hit the ground running,” Leone said. The town updated its emergency management plan after the 2017 flood. At the current water level, officials need to begin sandbagging and mobilize the National Guard.

The mayor told Leone on Sunday he was going to initiate a state of emergency. The Department of Public Works is hauling in sand and filling sandbags to protect 14 vulnerable residential properties.

“This community will wrap around itself and help each other,” Leone said. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a $14 million project to repair the east wall of the harbor. The wall was built on wood cribs filled with stone and capped with concrete, but wave action and erosion created one- to two-foot holes. The damage caused silting in the bay.

Leone’s marina lost about 12 slips due to sand coming through the wall. Crescent Beach received $14 million to build wave breaks on the north side to prevent erosion. Leone said the structures appear to be doing their job after he took a boat ride and observed three-foot waves being broken up. “It seems to be quieter between the shoreline and the structures,” Leone said.

“They are soon to be underwater if we continue to rise.” Leone said Sodus Bay can handle two more feet of water without shutting down. He said the community is resilient and able to handle what’s thrown at it.

“I don’t see it coming up two feet, so I think we’re going to be okay,” Leone said.
