Lozano telenovela? Frustrated fans wave ‘Free Chucky’ banner in flight over Snapdragon Stadium

San Diego FC in the midst of a nine-game winless streak across all competitions and the Hirving “Chucky” Lozano drama continues to linger. It’s starting to feel like a telenovela stuck in a never-ending cliffhanger.

Most of the fanbase continues to be split, with one camp blaming Lozano for the tensions that led the club to cut ties with him, while the other points the finger at head coach Mikey Varas and the front office for the impasse.

Trouble is, SDFC has sidelined him rather then sending him to another club, and fans frustrated by the dry spell have started to direct their ire at the team.

That’s why founding fan Abraham Teran – meaning an original season ticket holder from the club’s inaugural 2025 season – decided a flyover was in order. A plane coasted over Snapdragon Stadium with a banner reading “#Free Chucky=More Wins” for the San Diego FC-LAFC match Saturday.

“I believe the culture of this club is building and what we can accomplish together,” Teran said. “I am a very passionate fan of the team and Chucky Lozano. The passion you see isn’t just mine, it belongs to the fans who care deeply about San Diego FC.”

The revolt started after the 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers at Snapdragon on April 25. Fans remained after the final whistle just to chant Lozano’s name.

As things stand now, Lozano is guaranteed over $7.6 million annually on a contract that runs through the end of the 2028 season. He also has added fuel to the fire by posting multiple clips of himself training and working out at the team’s facilities despite not seeing game action since the 2025 Western Conference final.

The summer 2026 transfer window is expected to be the final opportunity for San Diego FC to part ways with the former Liga MX, Eredivisie and Serie A champion who has already give up the chance to represent Mexico in the FIFA World Cup.

“Disagreements are part of any strong club culture,” added Teran, who owns a printing business, Projx2Print, that includes shops in La Jolla and Chula Vista. “What’s important is keeping the door open for what’s best for San Diego FC and the supporters as a whole.”

For Teran, that means Lozano should see action.

“If he’s still on the team, I feel he should play,” said Teran. “Every family has their issues, but I feel this is something that can be talked about and we can get over and move on to make this like it was last season.”

In the meantime, on Saturday, SDFC will look for its first win since March 18, in a Concacaf Champions Cup match against Toluca, when the club heads to Lumen Field to face the Seattle Sounders.
