“Following the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew in a trucking accident this morning, J. Cole’s performance at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento tonight, August 27, has been canceled,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the crew member’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Sacramento Bee reported that the crew member “was driving a semi-truck that veered off southbound I-5 and overturned south of Zamora about 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.” He died at the scene. The truck was carrying gear for the Tuesday’s night’s concert at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
“A preliminary investigation found the driver of a Volvo semi-truck towing a trailer traveled off the freeway and onto the right shoulder, officers said. The driver tried to return to the roadway by turning left but lost control of the truck, causing it to overturn,” the outlet further details. “The driver, who was the only person in the truck, was identified by the Yolo County Coroner’s Office as Jarlath Parkinson, 66, of Jackson, South Carolina.”
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to contribute to the crash, but an investigation is ongoing.
“It’s unknown at this time, may have been a distraction or fell asleep. Unfortunately, the solo occupant did not survive the crash,” said Sgt. David Barker of the California Highway Patrol, per CBS News.
The rapper is scheduled for two more shows on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, at Oakland Arena. His 73-show “The Fall-Off” world tour began on July 10 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Along with North America, he has performances set in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with the tour set to end on Dec. 12 in Johannesburg.
