The Chicago area has had to deal with some unseasonably cool temperatures in May, and that pattern will continue overnight with a frost advisory.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will cover McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, and Will counties, along with northern and southern Cook County.
The advisory will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday, according to NWS officials.
A combination of factors will lead to dropping temperatures overnight, with decreasing clouds allowing daytime heat to escape into the atmosphere. As a result, low temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-to-upper 30s, and frost will be possible away from the urban heat island in Chicago.
Frost could harm or even kill sensitive outdoor vegetation or plants, and residents are being advised to take steps to protect those plants overnight.
Fortunately for area residents, things could slowly start to get warmer as the week moves along. High temperatures will be right around 60 degrees on Thursday, though there could be some spotty showers in the region.
Friday temperatures will be slightly warmer, climbing into the low-to-mid 60s, and Saturday will be a downright fabulous day, with highs in the low-70s under partly-to-mostly sunny skies.
There will be another brief cooldown after that as temperatures dip back into the 60s Sunday, with widespread rain developing late Saturday night and persisting through much of the day Sunday.
That cooldown won’t be long-lived, as temperatures are expected to slowly climb back into the 70s by the middle of next week.
