Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Cooper Zakorchemny has flipped his commitment to Northwestern University and will join the Wildcats beginning in the fall of 2026 after previously verbally committing to Indiana University back in 2024.
“After careful thought and consideration, I am thrilled to announce my commitment to swim and study at Northwestern University. First off, I want to thank Coach Rachel, Coach Jacob, and the rest of the NU staff for this opportunity, it truly means the world. I’d like to thank my parents for their unwavering support through it all. Finally, I like to thank my coach Dave Kraft, along with all my teammates who have been there every step of the way. I couldn’t have done it without you. Excited for this next chapter as a wildcat!”
Wrapping up his senior year at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD, Zakorchemny swims year-round with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and primarily specializes in distance freestyle.
Zakorchemny was listed as a “Best of the Rest” recruit for the distance events on our Way Too Early list of top recruits from the high school class of 2026 back in 2024 following his sophomore year, but he did not appear on the 2025 ranking after his junior year.
Zakorchemny recently competed at the 2026 NCSA Spring Championships, where he posted a series of strong performances. He placed 16th in the 500 free in 4:30.64 after posting a season-best time of 4:30.11 during prelims, and he finished 17th in the 1650 free in a season-best time of 15:36.48. He also contested the 400 IM (4:03.41), marking yet another season-best performance.
The majority of Zakorchemny’s personal best times in his top events were posted during the 2024-2025 season. He logged a lifetime best in the 200 free (1:40.38), 500 free (4:28.14), 1000 free (9:09.95) and 400 IM (4:00.10) at the 2024 RMSC Riley Eaton Holiday Invitational. At the 2023 iteration of the same meet, he posted a best time in the 1650 free (15:24.11).

The Wildcats sent seven athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship, where they finished 26th overall.
Based on the results from the 2026 Big Ten Conference Championships, Zakorchemny would have placed 18th in the 1650 free. Meanwhile, it took times of 1:35.63/4:21.99 to earn a second swim in the 200/500 free, putting him outside the cutoff in many of his top events. On the team itself, Zakorchemny should be one of the Wildcats’ top competitors in the distance events; he is poised to rank 2nd in the 1650 free, 3rd in the 1000 free and 5th in the 500 free next season, although that does not account for the other incoming freshmen.
The full list of recruits set to join Zakorchemny in Northwestern’s class of 2030 includes Ben Whiteford, Brandon Ha, Caleb Romero Serrano, Mike Marder, Jack Chiappetta and Zack Kusch, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
