We’ve turned the calendar to May, the final month of the college baseball regular season. The 12th week of the 2026 season is in the books, meaning SEC squads have played 8 of their 10 weekend series.
The 8th weekend delivered some spectacular action across multiple ranked matchups. Heading into the final 2 weeks, Georgia is still on top of the standings, with Texas A&M and Texas right behind. The top 5 spots stayed the same in the standings, but there was some shuffling in the middle and lower sections.
Here’s where everybody stands:
Georgia — 18-6 SEC (38-11 overall) Texas A&M — 15-8 (35-10) Texas — 15-8 (35-10) Mississippi State — 14-10 (36-12) Auburn — 14-10 (32-14) Alabama — 13-11 (32-16) Arkansas — 13-11 (32-17) Florida — 13-11 (31-17) Oklahoma — 12-12 (30-16) Ole Miss — 12-12 (32-17) Kentucky — 11-13 (29-16) Tennessee — 11-13 (31-17) Vanderbilt — 10-14 (27-22) LSU — 9-15 (28-21) South Carolina — 7-17 (22-27) Mizzou — 4-20 (21-26)Will the SEC’s incredible run in Omaha continue? Top Takeaways of the Week
Here were the biggest takeaways from a busy weekend across the conference:
Georgia closing in on conference title
Since the stumble a few weeks ago, UGA has been steadily cruising along in first place. This past weekend’s sweep of Mizzou doesn’t come as a huge surprise, but sweeps are always impressive, especially with 2 run-rule victories shortening Games 2 and 3 to 7- and 8-inning contests.
The Bulldogs have won their last 3 SEC series, going 7-2 against Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mizzou. Georgia is now 18-6 in conference play, giving Wes Johnson’s squad a 2.5-game lead over Texas A&M and Texas. Further behind are Mississippi State and Auburn at 14-10.
The Aggies and Longhorns will be concentrated on their own games, but their fans can multitask and cheer for LSU. The Tigers, who can’t afford a sweep, head to Athens for the 9th weekend of conference action. The Lone Star State rivals are now tied for second place after A&M went 1-2 against Auburn and Texas took 2-of-3 against Mississippi State in a pair of marquee matchups. The Aggies hold a head-to-head tiebreaker, going 2-0 over the Longhorns.
The Dawgs are on a 6-game winning streak and have won 8 of their last 10. It’s hard to see UGA letting the conference title slip away over the final 2 weeks.
Kentucky and LSU help their causes
It took 8 weeks, but LSU finally has an SEC sweep on its 2026 résumé. While it was against a struggling South Carolina squad, the Tigers are thrilled to add 3 conference wins to their record (28-21 overall, 9-15 SEC).
LSU’s RPI is still a rough No. 55, but that’s not a major concern right now. Jay Johnson’s team needs to win 4 of its final 6 SEC regular-season games. The Bayou Bengals play their next 6 against Georgia (No. 16 RPI) and Florida (No. 12 RPI). Beat the Dawgs and Gators 4 times, and the RPI is likely to work itself out.
After dropping 6 consecutive SEC series, UK finally ended its skid. The Wildcats boosted their NCAA Tournament résumé in a big way by taking 2-of-3 against Tennessee. Earlier in the week, D1Baseball considered UK one of the First Four Out. That’s likely to change with the Cats now 11-13 in SEC play and the No. 35 RPI.
For Tennessee, the series loss is disappointing. But it’s not all bad for the Vols. They avoided the sweep and collected an SEC victory, making them 11-13 in conference play. UT figures to need just a couple more SEC wins to secure a spot in the field of 64.
Alabama sweeps Vandy, shaking up postseason projections
The 8th weekend of conference play only had a handful of sweeps. One could argue that the series outcome with the biggest impact was Alabama’s sweep of Vanderbilt.
April was an extremely up-and-down month for UA. Things started well with a series win over Oklahoma, but the Crimson Tide had a miserable 3-week stretch against Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee, going 2-7.
Entering the Vandy series, Alabama was considered the No. 17 seed nationally by D1Baseball, just outside the range of hosting an NCAA Regional. Three wins over Vandy, though, have things looking better for the Tide. They’re now 13-11 in conference play with struggling South Carolina up next. Bama has the No. 5 RPI, which the committee will likely consider host-worthy with a solid finish to the regular season.
Vanderbilt, on the other hand, is in an odd spot. The Commodores are 10-14 in SEC play. They have a favorable draw, though, of Mizzou and South Carolina for their final 2 regular-season series.
Vandy’s RPI, though, is now an ugly No. 71. Before the sweep, D1Baseball had the Dores as a Last Four In team. The Vandy Boys will almost certainly finish better than 13-17 in SEC play, but will beating up on South Carolina and Mizzou be enough to raise the RPI? Vanderbilt might have to make some noise in Hoover.
Auburn continues push to be fourth SEC team among top-8 national seeds
It’s an accomplishment to make the NCAA Tournament. Every team wants to play the Regional round in its home park. The real prize, though, is being a top-8 national seed and controlling your Super Regional destiny.
Auburn continues to make a strong case for having homefield advantage until Omaha. Before traveling to College Station, AU was projected as the No. 8 overall seed by D1Baseball. The Tigers boosted their stock tremendously by taking the first 2 games against Texas A&M, D1Baseball’s projected No. 5 seed.
AU’s RPI is up to No. 4 nationally after the road series win. The Tigers are now a solid 14-10 in SEC play. But they have some tough series ahead against Mississippi State and Georgia with a top-8 seed (and a potential Super Regional at Plainsman Park) hanging in the balance.
It’s nothing new, though, for the team No. 1 in strength of schedule.
