Coronation Street newcomers confirmed as Game of Thrones actor joins the cast for major new storylines

Coronation Street is set to play host to two newcomers, with Game of Thrones and EastEnders actors both set to arrive on the cobbles in upcoming episodes.

Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) is set to be reunited with his estranged father, with EastEnders and The Bill actor Ian Burfield taking on the role of Ross, The Sun has confirmed.

Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said that Ross will be involved in "explosive" scenes, and that he'll have a big part to play in the exit of Tyrone's birth mother, Cassie (Claire Sweeney).

"Tyrone's dad makes an appearance in the show. Needless to say, he comes with quite a bit of drama, and it's going to cause quite a lot of friction within that family, obviously with Cassie’s history," added Brooks.

"It will contribute to [Cassie's] exit, which is going to be massive and quite explosive. It’ll be full of all the twists and turns that you can come to expect from an exit.

"Tyrone’s in the mindset of, 'I'm in my 40s, I've survived this long without a dad.' The dad is very keen to connect with Tyrone.

"It’s not long before the dad makes eyes at one of the residents, and maybe a bit of a relationship starts there. It's very domesticated. It really shines a spotlight on Fiz and Tyrone as a couple and that dynamic as a family.

"Cassie is, needless to say, not happy that this guy has turned back up."

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones actor Junade Khan, who previously played a Dothraki warrior in the HBO fantasy series, will be swapping Westeros for Weatherfield, as he joins the cast as Idris Nazir, a new love interest for Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson).

Brooks added of the character, who's also Alya's (Sair Khan) cousin: "He’s a savvy kind of business guy, he's got a bit of a ruthless streak, he's not ready to get his hands dirty slightly, but he can charm the birds from the trees.

"He’s a new love interest for Leanne. The attraction is instantaneous. It kind of gives Leanne a new lease of life somewhat. She’s been harbouring a deep-rooted resentment towards Toyah and Nick, because that's the life she had.

"This guy comes along, he's got it all, he makes her laugh. He's funny, he's a handsome chap, and he ruffles a lot of feathers, but he's not without an edge. He’s not soft, and he's certainly no pushover.

"He butts heads with some of our more alpha kind of characters quite early on."

Friday's episode of Coronation Street airs at 8.30pm on ITV1, and won't be added to ITVX until after broadcast.
