Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord season 1 ending explained: Every twist, turn, and death broken down

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Maul Shadow Lord season 1 episodes 9 and 10.

The latest animated entry in the Star Wars universe, Maul: Shadow Lord, has brought its first season to an action-packed conclusion.

The penultimate episode saw the teams of both Maul and the Jedi and Captain Lawson coming to an unlikely alliance in an effort to escape Janix and its imperial blockade.

Would they all make it to the ship of Dryden Vos and the sanctuary of Crimson Dawn, or would the inquisitors catch up to them?

So what went down in the epic finale of Maul Shadow Lord Season 1? Here's everything you need to know.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord season 1 ending explained: Does Darth Vader appear?

While a pair of inquisitors, Marrok and The Eleventh Brother, have featured throughout the show, one of the main questions on fans' lips is whether Darth Vader would make an appearance.

With Maul and the two Jedi proving troublesome for the inquisitors to deal with, Vader is dispatched to help, making the odds stacked even further against Maul and the Jedi.

This Vader is silent throughout, almost like a horror villain at times, raw and unrestrained. It offers a glimpse at some of the most brutal Darth Vader action across animation or live-action. Whether he will cross paths with Maul again remains to be seen.

Who dies in the Maul Shadow Lord season 1 finale?

While we know Maul lives on to the events of Star Wars Rebels, some years after the setting of this show, the fate of the other characters is harder to pin down.

The two Jedi in the show, Master Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara, seemed the most likely casualties, given they don’t feature in other Star Wars media.

Having to fight off both Darth Vader and two highly trained inquisitors, it seemed unlikely all would make it out of this scrape alive. Master Daki was the one to take the fall, trying to save his padawan Devon, so she could escape.

He lost a bruising battle with Vader after being left on his own by Maul. With Vader at points fighting all three force users, Daki on his own stood little chance. With Devon witnessing this, it looks set to be a major point of development for her moving forward.

The other major casualty in the finale was Captain Brander Lawson, the main non-force user in the show. He sacrificed his cover to help Rylee and Two Boots reach the safety of the Crimson Dawn ship. Whilst we don’t see him die, leaving open a possible return. It is heavily implied.

One of the key reasons for Dryden Vos coming to Maul’s aid is to help him achieve his aim of taking control of the Crimson Dawn syndicate.

We know that the two still work closely together in Solo, set some years after this show. How the pair came to work together will likely be a key theme of subsequent seasons of this show.

    What happened to The Inquisitors?

The Eleventh Brother eventually meets his end at the hands of Ahsoka Tano, as seen in Tales of the Jedi. Marrock makes an appearance in Ahsoka as what looked like a reanimated corpse. While he was pushed off a bridge here, we again don’t see his death, so there is room for him to appear ahead of his role in Ahsoka.

This likely isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Jedi hunters; it is a matter of whether it is this particular duo or others we’ve seen across Star Wars media who pick up Maul and Devon’s trail.

    Is there a post-credits scene?

While we know the show has been renewed for a second season, was there a tease for the direction the show might head in for its sophomore season?

Surprisingly, there is no mid- or post-credits scene, meaning we will have to wait for our first glimpse of where the story is headed next.

Fans can at least rest assured that this isn’t the last we will see of Maul, Devon and co.
