A beloved home goods retailer that closed hundreds of stores nationwide in recent years is making a comeback by merging with a popular brand, and shoppers will soon start to notice a difference.
Home organization retailer The Container Store last week began a nationwide “Store Changing,” according to a release, with nearly 100 stores nationwide undergoing transformations in order to integrate Bed Bath & Beyond.
The “reset,” officials said in a release, also means The Container Store will discontinue approximately 30% of its items with major sales and discounts offered in order to “streamline assortments, improve space productivity and create room for new products expected to arrive in phases later this year.”
“This is a reset with purpose,” Jen Pape, Senior Vice President of Stores at The Container Store said in the release. “We are actively reshaping our stores to make room for what’s next. By streamlining select categories today, we’re creating the space and flexibility needed to introduce Bed Bath & Beyond products and deliver a more complete home experience for our customers.”
The discounts began last week, across all store locations and online, the release said. Beginning in May, 98 locations across the U.S. — including four stores in the Chicago area — will transition to a new Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond format.
“The reimagined stores will combine The Container Store’s organizing solutions, in-home services and expertise with an expanded home assortment and complementary offerings from Bed Bath & Beyond,” the release said.
The transformations come weeks after Bed Bath & Beyond announced in a letter to shareholders it was acquiring The Container Store, Elfa and Closet Works.
“We believe we have assembled a lineup of brands that covers the most important categories that help turn a house into a home, with a clear mandate to make that process simple and affordable,” the letter, dated April 2, said.
According to the release, the following Container Store locations in Illinois will be reimagined into a Container Store + Bed Bath and Beyond retailer:
