From Drew Barrymore to Candace Cameron, Here’s What Halloween Looked Like for ’80s Kids

If you grew up in the ’80s, then you’ll remember how different Halloween was back in the day. Nobody had two-story plastic skeleton lawn decorations or enormous inflatable monsters or motorized costumes. Trunk or treat wasn’t a thing. Instead, kids wore suffocating plastic masks, rang doorbells at houses with actual jack o’ lanterns on the front porch (featuring wax candles, not the LED kind) and hoped they wouldn’t find any razor blades in their candy. (Why was that such a big deal in those days?)

If you didn’t grow up in the ’80s, on the other hand, it might be hard to imagine what it was like. Luckily, there’s plenty of photographic evidence…including some pretty priceless pics of young celebs all dressed up for the holiday.

So whether these pics are a trip down memory lane or a peek into a history you never knew, they’re sure to get you in the spirit of the season.

    Drew Barrymore, 1985

Does it get more ’80s than this? She’s wearing a purple wig that looks like something from Jem and the Holograms, and that Crayon costume couldn’t be more classic. The blue eyeshadow is the icing on the cake.

    Ghost Babies, 1984

These ghost costumes are a pretty genius alternative to the usual sheet-over-the-head approach, since many toddlers won’t even tolerate wearing a regular hat. Before camera phones and Instagram, snapshots were plagued by dubious lighting and faces caught mid-expression…and that was the charm.

Some Kind of Halloween Banquet (?), 1986

Cheers! Here we have…um, a kid in a bathrobe? Pretty sure that next one is Red Riding Hood, then…who knows…then a miserable-looking ghost, a…something else…and a pilgrim, all toasting to the joy of Halloween.

The Princess and the Monk, 1988

Okay, this is actually a still from the Growing Pains Halloween episode, “Fool for Love,” which aired on Oct. 19, 1988. But it’s still a pretty accurate representation of what a Halloween party looked like in the late ’80s: That one pumpkin costume that looked like a bean bag, a football player, a devil, a convict, a princess, a pirate, and…a monk?

Plus, that princess is Candace Cameron (now Bure), making a guest appearance as Ben Seaver’s friend! (Candace’s older brother, Kirk, was the star of the show.)

Halloween at the White House, 1989

President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush welcomed a crowd of costumed characters to the White House for a festive celebration (and look, a devil showed up!).

In another shot from the Bush administration’s spooky shindig, a classic clown entertains Snow White with a balloon animal (as some guy who looks like a Secret Service agent watches).

    Drew Barrymore again, 1985

That gloriously ’80s costume deserves another look, wouldn’t you say? In this shot, Barrymore is making one of her trademark adorable faces. (This expression seems to say, “I’m so over wearing this wig right now!”)

Admit it: Halloween was better in the ’80s.
