OK, so let me start with this, because it’s fresh on the mind. The Cubs bullpen is in tatters, but it’s inexcusable to come into the game, up two runs, and walk the first three batters you face, loading the bases with nobody out for Fernando Tatis Jr. Corbin Martin had absolutely no idea where any pitch was going. It was deeply frustrating. Thankfully, Ben Brown was ready to come in and play hero (sac fly, double-play grounder) just to preserve the lead. (Then he and Hoby Milner tag-teamed the 9th to shut it down.)
That is all to say: if Daniel Palencia comes back healthy on Friday, that would be amazing timing. He’s needed. Badly.
BUT IT’S A WIN. A series win, too, on the road (West Coast!) against a good team. That’s huge.
Jameson Taillon looked untouchable early (indeed, he didn’t give up a hit until the 5th), and ultimately departed after seven innings and a quality start. Honestly, realistically, that’s what you’re hoping for every time Taillon takes the ball: a homer or two, because that’s likely, but six-ish innings and three-ish total runs. Good day for him.
The Cubs had a chance to break the game open right out of the gate, with the bases loaded and Michael Busch rocketing one up the middle. But Xander Bogaerts made a great play, turning a two-run single into an inning-ending double-play. Who knows how many runs he ultimately saved with that one? Michael Busch had another rocket caught in the 9th that could’ve been another insurance run. Tough luck day for him.
The Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Matt Shaw, with his three hits, including a homer. I won’t say he was “a triple short of the cycle,” even though it’s true (it happens all the time! the triple is the hardest part!). Great game for Shaw.
