Diamondbacks recall Philip Abner, their 1st left-handed reliever of the year

The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned relief pitcher Andrew Hoffmann after his eight-run inning on Tuesday in Milwaukee, and in his place, they recalled left-hander Philip Abner from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks went more than a month without a left-handed reliever on the roster, optioning candidates Abner and Brandyn Garcia to Triple-A out of camp.

Arizona relievers have allowed a .271 batting average against lefties (fourth highest in MLB), although the club has received quality results from right-handers Juan Morillo (.161) and Taylor Clarke (.226) against such matchups.

Abner made his MLB debut last season, and the 23-year-old has pitched in nine games out of the bullpen in Triple-A this year. He owns a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. He has allowed runs in two of his last eight appearances.

“It’s nice to have some versatility,” manager Torey Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Wednesday. “Hopefully keep some lefties on the bench. It’s a different look.”

The southpaw made five major league outings last year (4.91 ERA in 3.2 innings). He does not deliver overwhelming heat, relying on the command of his slider, low-90s mph four-seamer and changeup.

The D-backs opted to bring back Abner as opposed to Garcia or a pair of right-handed relievers on the 40-man roster who have started the season well: Kade Strowd and Yilber Diaz.

Hoffmann entered Tuesday’s outing with a 2.38 ERA in seven games with a 6.57 FIP (fielding-independent pitching) that suggested some luck early on.

The scale completely flipped, as Hoffmann allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits — only one of which went for extra bases and two were bunts. The right-hander only recorded an out, as he threw 38 pitches.

With Brandon Pfaadt having thrown 56 pitches on Saturday and Hoffmann to be unavailable for multiple days after Tuesday, Arizona needed to bring a fresh arm into the bullpen.

    Diamondbacks SS Geraldo Perdomo returns

Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo returned to the starting lineup on Wednesday after missing time with a sprained ankle. He was back in his spot atop the batting order.

Perdomo exited Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City with a left ankle sprain he suffered retrieving a ball after an error on defense. He slammed his glove against the wall back in the dugout.

He remained out of the lineup for the next two games, but Lovullo told reporters that he would likely avoid the injured list. Perdomo was back on the field pregame on Tuesday in Milwaukee taking ground balls.

Catcher Adrian Del Castillo also left with an injury during the Mexico City Series, coming out of Sunday’s game with a dislocated finger. He returned to the lineup as a designated hitter on Tuesday
