BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee men’s swimmer Martin Espernberger has been named the male recipient of the 2025-26 Southeastern Conference H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced on Wednesday. Espernberger was chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from SEC universities and will receive a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship.
SEC ReleaseHe becomes the first Tennessee male swimmer and third swim & dive athlete to win the award, with Lauryn McCalley taking the honor in 2005 and Christine Magnuson in 2009. Espernberger is now the eighth Tennessee student-athlete to be recognized for the award, with football’s Parker Henry being the last winner in 2018.
“Being selected for the McWhorter Award means a great deal to me”, said Espernberger. “It represents the balance of discipline across academics and athletics, and it motivates me to continue pursuing graduate work in power systems and power electronics with the goal of contributing to practical energy solutions.”
This marks Espernberger’s second academic honor he has received this month. He was previously awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
“Martin Espernberger has been relentless in his pursuit of excellence in every area of his life—athletically, academically, and in service to others,” said Director of Swimming & Diving Matt Kredich. “What stands out most is not just what he has accomplished, but how he has done it. He’s set an enduring example for his teammates and classmates through his humility, consistency, discipline, and passion.”
Espernberger has been an integral member of the swimming and diving program since he stepped foot on campus. The senior has won three SEC medals in his collegiate career, including taking gold in the 200 butterfly back in 2024. Espernberger received All-America distinction three times, garnering first team honors after placing fifth in the 200 Fly at the 2025 NCAA Championships. He has earned All-SEC honors in each of his four years on Rocky Top, collecting SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2023 and being named All-SEC each of the last three seasons. He finished his Tennessee career holding the school record in the 200 butterfly with a 1:39.34, while also sitting seventh all-time in program history in the 100 butterfly with a time of 45.43.
Espernberger has also reached success on the international stage, representing his home nation, Austria. He was a member of the Austrian team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he reached the final in the 200 fly and placed sixth. The Linz, Austria, native earned his first medal for his home nation at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, taking the bronze in the 200 butterfly. He holds the Austrian record in the 200m butterfly, setting the mark at the 2024 Summer Olympics with a 1:54.17.
Espernberger will graduate with a degree in electrical engineering in May, where he holds a 3.86 GPA. He has twice been named a CSC Academic All-American, receiving the honors in 2024 and 2025. He was selected as the SEC Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year and has been tabbed to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in consecutive seasons.
