Kentucky coach Mark Pope was dealt a brutal blow on the recruiting trail on Tuesday night.
Tyran Stokes, the consensus No. 1 player in the nation for the class of 2026, committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks next season despite a months-long effort by UK’s staff to land his pledge.
Kentucky went to great lengths in an attempt to bring Stokes to Lexington next season, but ultimately came up short.
That failure paired with Kentucky’s struggles in the transfer portal so far this offseason has Big Blue Nation frustrated with the direction of the program.
Kentucky has produced middling results through 2 seasons with Pope at the helm and may be taking a step back in Year 3 barring any significant roster moves in the coming weeks. Key players such as Otega Oweh, Denzel Aberdeen, Brandon Garrison, Collin Chandler, Jasper Johnson, Jaland Lowe and Jayden Quaintance are all set to move on from the program this offseason.

As things currently stand, Kentucky’s roster is likely to be built around Washington transfer guard Zoom Diallo and returning big man Malachi Moreno. The Wildcats are certainly capable of adding big-time talent in the coming weeks, but the fanbase is currently frustrated with the direction of the program in the wake of missing out on Stokes.
Here’s some of the social media reaction to this news:
Losing to Bill Self on the guy Self wanted most is not really a knock on Mark Pope.Putting your entire Class of 2026 recruiting focus on trying to get the guy Self wanted and everyone told you he would probably get … is a mind-boggling mistake.
— Kyle Tucker (@KyleTuckerCBB) April 28, 2026This app is about to be a cesspool so I’ll just say this. Mark Pope should have pivoted and gotten 2-3 high school guys instead of putting all his eggs in the Stokes basket. To be fair to him, it’s always easier to say that in hindsight. Now you have a lot of money to play…
— Nolan Fleming (@nolanuky27) April 28, 2026Tyran Stokes commits to Kansas.Kentucky is a Nike school, the brand Stokes is signed with. They had the last visit before his decision, the highest offer, and displayed a clear willingness to build around him. With that kind of pitch, you have to close.
— Tristan Pharis (@TristanUda) April 28, 2026Kentucky waited a long time to try and get Stokes…passed on giving money on some targets in order to grab him It didn’t work out and he went way it looked like he would for some time. Kentucky needs to find a replacement that is very talented and the options aren’t plentiful
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) April 28, 2026This is my take for the most part. Stokes has seemed to favor Kansas forever…and he loved SelfBut Kentucky waited a long time to make it happen. And that will be a mistake unless they pull something big here in the next few weeks t.co/VdfwuvcnnN
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) April 28, 2026And with that, Mark Pope’s time at Kentucky has come to an end
— Greg Waddell (@gwizzy12) April 28, 2026And just to bottom-line it: Kentucky is not comporting itself as a top program in college basketball under Pope. It just isn’t. Zero lottery pick-level high school recruits signed, one top-15 transfer (with a torn ACL) signed in three cycles. t.co/WkRpcjcxXU
— Kyle Tucker (@KyleTuckerCBB) April 28, 2026And that’s the problem Mark Pope made. Prioritized Stokes and passed on 2 other top recruits because of it. Failed his biggest offseason and it’s not even close right now
— Bobby Reagan (@BarstoolReags) April 28, 2026Mark Pope might actually be an incompetent coach. Never thought that was within his range of outcomes t.co/JV3AnygeGS
— Clay Fink (@clay_fink) April 28, 2026Ryan Hammer would win a recruiting battle against Mark Pope
— College Basketball Content (@CBBcontent) April 28, 2026Mark Pope’s biggest offseason add this spring was an assistant coach who may have committed an NCAA violation interacting with a kid about to choose Kansas over Kentucky pic.twitter.com/JrnwU1xH02
— Greg Waddell (@gwizzy12) April 28, 2026Oh boy. Another swing and a miss by Mark Pope. t.co/dZG0L1llok
— Scott Garrard (@ScottyGZone) April 28, 2026Mark Pope has turned us into a joke. Start the coaching search now! @UKAthletics t.co/sJ3itXOS3q
