Fifteen Labour MPs rebelled against the Government by voting in favour of a Conservative-led motion to launch a parliamentary inquiry into Sir Keir Starmer over the Peter Mandelson scandal.
The motion was ultimately dismissed by 335 to 223 votes in the House of Commons on Tuesday as the vast majority of Labour MPs fell in line with the Government.
But a not-insignificant number of his party’s members disobeying Downing Street’s orders by going against the whip may present cause for concern for the embattled Prime Minister, particularly with leadership rivals understood to be plotting against him.
Among the Labour MPs who voted against the Government was Emma Lewell, the MP for South Shields, who earlier condemned the Government’s response to the debate on whether to refer the Prime Minister to the Privileges Committee.
Prior to the vote, she said: “I have watched this whole sorry saga play out for weeks now, like the public, I feel let down, disappointed and I am angry.”
Lewell was joined in the “aye” lobby by party colleagues including Kate Osborne (Jarrow and Gateshead East), Cat Smith (Lancaster and Wyre), Luke Myer (Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland), Grahame Morris (Easington), and Mary Kelly Foy (City of Durham). Smith also voted against the motion, which could indicate a formal abstention.
Karl Turner (Kingston upon Hull East), who recently lost the Labour whip following repeated outspoken criticism of Starmer’s government, also voted in favour of the motion, while there was a total of 54 Labour MPs whose votes were not recorded.
There are several possible reasons that could explain why an MP did not cast a vote for a particular motion in parliament. The Speaker and deputies, for example, are unable to vote due to the impartiality of the chair.
Members could also be absent carrying out constituency or ministerial business, or be unable to attend for other reasons. If any members are present but choose not to cast a vote, that is what is called an abstention.
However, the breakdown of each vote’s results on parliament’s website does not give the exact reason for why each MP may have failed to vote on a particular motion, such as this one.
