A shooting stemming from a fight on a popular downtown strip near Indiana University in Bloomington led to a chaotic scene early Sunday morning, with multiple people injured and an investigation underway.
The incident unfolded close to midnight in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, hours after the school’s famous “Little 500” cycling race.
According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers were monitoring a large crowd that had gathered in the street when they heard gunshots. The crowd began scattering, police said, and officers immediately found multiple people wounded.
Five people were injured by gunfire, police said. Others suffered cuts and scrapes as they fell and ran from the scene.
After reviewing cell phone footage, police believe the shooting began after a fight between two females broke out in front of the Five Guys restaurant on Kirkwood Avenue. During the fight, multiple people could be seen drawing guns, police said, with two people believed to have fired.
“At that point, everyone began running from the scene,” a press release from Bloomington Police said.
Alerts sent by IU Police and Public Safety starting at 11:35 p.m. stated that police were responding to shots fired on the popular strip of bars and restaurants.
“Take safe shelter,” the alert said. “Lock door. Avoid the area.”
IU went on to say that police were responding to Kirkwood Avenue, West of Dunn Street, and that shots were not fired on campus.
According to officials, all five of those struck by gunfire were females, including a 20-year-old who was was hospitalized after being struck by a bullet in the torso. She was last listed in stable condition.
Police said the others struck by gunfire were injured by embedded bullet fragments in the legs, feet and ankles, including an 18-year-old female, a 22-year-old female, a 17-year-old female anda 21-year-old female.
Indiana University Associate Vice President and IUPD Superintendent Benjamin Hunter confirmed at a media briefing Sunday afternoon that that none the people injured are students at Indiana University.
In a statement obtained by the Indiana Daily Statement, IU spokesperson Mark Bode said safety remains the school’s “top priority.”
“Last night marred what should have been a celebratory weekend for the IU and Bloomington communities,” the statement read. ” “While no IU students are believed to be involved, we condemn the violence in the strongest terms and thank the Bloomington Police Department, IUPD, State Police and other law enforcement agencies who responded to the events off campus. Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic incident.”
Photos from the scene show dozens of people standing out in the street with police vehicles and tape blocking off parts of the road where debris could be seen.
