The Chicago area will see a gloomy day Monday, with the first of two rounds of rain and storms moving in during the morning hours and a severe weather threat looming later in the day.
As of about 9 a.m., Live Doppler 5 Radar showed scattered rain already taking hold of parts of the area as a cluster of storm moves east.
The first round of rain, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, could contain heavy downpours, lightning and gusty winds, with showers lasting through about 2 p.m.
The first round of storms, Roman said, was not expected to turn severe.
The second round however could, Roman said, with the entire Chicago area under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five. Between 4 and 11 p.m., all weather hazards were at play, including large hail, winds as high as 70 mph and heavy downpours, Roman said.
Isolated tornadoes were also possible, Roman said, though the greatest risk was mainly south of the Kankakee and Illinois River Valleys.
