For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Carmel Swim Club’s Carter Hadley has announced that he will stay in-state to further his academic and athletic career with his commitment to Indiana University.
Hometown kid
I’m proud to announce that I will be continuing my swimming career at Indiana University in the fall. I’d like to thank my family, Coach Plumb, and Coach Pfaff for their belief in me during this process. Thank you to Coach Ray and Coach Cory at IU for this opportunity. I can’t wait to get down to Bloomington and begin the grind. GO HOOSIERS
Hadley represented Carmel High School, where he took the win in the 100 backstroke at the 2026 Indiana High School State Championships in late February, touching in a career-best 48.41, improving on his 2025 performance, in which he finished 4th in this event in 49.18. In addition to his backstroke gold, Hadley also finished runner-up in the 100 freestyle, touching in 44.22 (a personal best at the time), a one-spot improvement from 2025, when he finished 3rd as a junior (45.17).
A month later, Hadley rewrote his personal record book at the Four Corners Speedo Sectional Championships (SCY). There, he clocked several of his fastest ever times, including the 50 free (20.74), 100 free (44.03), 200 free (1:35.58), 200 back (1:46.86), 100 fly (49.51), and the 200 IM (1:50.80).
Hadley has also been named to a pair of USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Teams and was a 2024-2025 NISCA All-American in the 100 back and as a member of both the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay.

100 Back: 48.41 200 Back: 1:46.86 50 Free: 20.74 100 Free: 44.03 200 Free: 1:35.58 500 Free: 4:35.23 100 Fly: 49.51 200 IM: 1:50.80Hadley joins an Indiana program that recently won the Men’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships and finished 3rd at the Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Based on Hadley’s best times, he would have finished 23rd in the 200 free, 30th in the 100 free, and 38th in the 100 back at the 2026 Big Ten Championships.
Hadley is a multi-use weapon, someone who can contribute on nearly every relay and get himself into scoring positions throughout a championship meet. His 100 free is flirting with the scoring range from the 2026 Big Ten championships, while his 200 free is already inside that range.
He is showing no signs of slowing down now, as both of his performances at his state championships were significantly faster than his 2025 showing (which were both career bests at the time they were swum).
Indiana will be losing Owen McDonald, who won the 100 back at the Big Ten Championships, and will also be without Kai Van Westering‘s 68 points from 2026. However, the addition of Hadley seems to nearly perfectly fill that Van Westering-sized void, as Hadley, though still a bit off from those times that Westering was, could very well find himself in those higher placing finals if he stays on this progression path that he is currently on.
There is some flexibility in what Hadley may swim at Indiana, especially regarding the primary focus on either backstroke or freestyle, and which relays Indiana will want to use him on.
Hadley joins a loaded Hoosier recruiting class with Landon Fike, Matt Krause, Elliot Rijnovean, Oliver Dawson, Gabriel Manteufel, Sam Wolf, and Brody Engelstad.
