Winter Juniors qualifier Ben Rines has announced his commitment to stay in state and swim for Florida Atlantic University beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Florida Atlantic University. First, l want to thank God for guiding me through this process. I also want to thank my family for supporting me from the start. Thank you to Coach Joe, Coach Kim, for always pushing me and getting me to this point. Finally, special thanks to Coach Bubb and Coach Lara for giving me this opportunity! GO OWLS!

A senior at Winter Park High School in Orlando, Rines has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team all four years. He also trains year-round with the Blue Dolfins, where he primarily specializes in breaststroke.

A four-year qualifier for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Championships, he wrapped up his high school career this past November with his best-ever performance at the meet. He finished second in the 100 breast, breaking 56 for the first time in prelims (55.88), before going on to hit 55.56 in the final. He also swam an off event in the 100 free (47.05), winning the ‘B’ final.

A month later, Rines competed at Winter Juniors – East for the first time in his career, where he placed 75th in the 100 breast (56.80) and 62nd in the 200 breast (2:04.06). The 200 breast performance built off a 2:04.53 swim at a local club meet a week earlier that marked a nearly four-second drop.

He wrapped up the short course season last month at the Florida Senior Championships, where he clocked all of his current breaststroke lifetime bests. He won the 50 breast (25.17), a non-collegiate event, and took fifth in the 100 breast (54.64) and sixth in the 200 breast (1:59.95), his first time under 55 and 2:00 and his first time making an ‘A’ final at the meet.

A year ago, Rines owned PBs of 57.52 and 2:08.16 in the 100/200 breast, meaning he has dropped nearly three seconds in the 100 and over eight seconds in the 200, an improvement curve that bodes well as he prepares to enter the collegiate system.

A Division I program, Florida Atlantic competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, with the men claiming their first-ever team championship this past season. Based on the results from the meet, Rines’ lifetime bests would have placed eighth in the 200 breast and 12th in the 100 breast, setting him up to be a contributor right from the start.

On the team itself, Rines is projected to rank fourth in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 breast, adding depth to a young breaststroke group that is made up of current freshmen and sophomores. FAU has built a strong breaststroke core, and it returns all of its 2026 scorers after placing two swimmers in both the A and B finals of the 100 and 200 breast at this year’s championship meet.

Currently set to join Rines in the Owls’ class of 2030 are Martin Montalvo (fly/back), Seth Hyde (distance free), and Owen Cooper (sprint free).
