Austin Brown Bows Out of Bulls’ President Search — A Blessing in Disguise?

Our Chicago Bulls’ head coach search just lost a prime candidate in Taylor Jenkins this week. Now, their quest for a new team president also has one fewer candidate.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported Friday morning that Austin Brown, a contender for the gig Chicago had also pursued for the GM spot in 2020, will remain in his current role as the co-head of CAA’s basketball division.

Charania also reveals that Chicago began interviewing new replacements for team president Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley at the start of this week.

With Brown already down for the count, that leaves five more confirmed names of interest for the Bulls: Atlanta Hawks senior vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham, Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey, Detroit Pistons senior vice president Dennis Lindsey, and San Antonio Spurs assistant general manager Dave Telep.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley, Chicago is also considering at least three other contenders for its president role.

Could Brown’s Departure Be a Blessing in Disguise for the Bulls?

Brown represents several top players at CAA, along with colleague Aaron Mintz. Beyond retired Hall of Famers Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony, the dynamic duo also reps All-Stars Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young, Zion Williamson, and Jaren Jackson Jr.; All-Defensive Team New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby; Dallas Mavericks Rookie of the Year frontrunner Cooper Flagg; and one-time All-Star Dallas point guard D’Angelo Russell.

Brown has been a rising star on the agency side, having been named to Forbes’ 2015 30 Under 30 and Sport Business Journal’s 2020 Forty Under 40

An agent’s goals are quite different from the ambitions of a team president. Where a president wants to pay a player as little as possible, the agent wants him to earn as much as possible. So a bloated D’Angelo Russell contract is thus a victory for Brown and Mintz, and not a show of weakness.

In Brown, the Bulls clearly wanted to uncover their own Bob Myers, Rob Pelinka or Leon Rose. But the agent-to-president pipeline can make for a jarring transition. And among these guys, it’s critical to note that the most successful — Myers — had seasoning as an assistant general manager with the Golden State Warriors before taking over the main job.

Chicago had been eyeing Brown to essentially operate as the lieutenant to Karnisovas, before he declined and Eversley stepped in. With Brown not possessing any prior front office experience, this felt like the right play.

This writer is always wary of anybody who takes over the lead front office gig from the top rope, be that a famous player-turned-announcer (here’s looking at you, Steve Kerr and Magic Johnson) or an agent.

Now, the Bulls might have been saved from themselves, as Brown has opted to stay with CAA. The other known commodities being interviewed all have significant front office experience. Granted, so did Arturas Karnisovas. Still, this is the safer play.
