When you load the bases in the 10th inning with nobody out, needing only a run to win, you’re winning that game 9 times out of 10. Maybe that’s not the precise math, but you know what I mean. It SHOULD be the default expectation.
Yet we know as Cubs fans over the years, there are stretches of a season where you just feel like the opposite is the expectation. “How are they gonna blow this?” It’s not every year all year, just certain stretches in certain years, when it feels like everything that can go wrong is indeed going wrong. Phillies fans probably feel like that right about now.
Anyway, the point is, I had absolutely zero of that negative feeling yesterday. Even as Michael Busch struck out, I still felt really confident the Cubs were going to walk that thing off one way or another. Which, of course, is exactly what Dansby Swanson did, sending one hard to the gap in right center, notching his first walk-off hit as a Chicago Cub. Pretty wild that he hadn’t yet done that with the Cubs.
Huge credit goes to the rest of the offense for making Swanson’s moment possible, and to the pitching staff – Riley Martin and Javier Assad in particular – for keeping the game tied long enough to afford Swanson the opportunity to win it.
