Recap: Denver Nuggets get run out of the gym against the Minnesota Timberwolves, lose game three 113-96

The Denver Nuggets were looking to get back in the driver’s seat of their playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight but they were dealt an early blow with Aaron Gordon unable to play and that seemed to doom them from the start. The Nuggets were awful coming out of the gate and never recovered. The Timberwolves kept the Denver from scoring for long periods of the first quarter and that led to some slumped shoulders and defeted looks early. Minnesota attacked the paint relentlessly all night to earn a wire to wire victory despite a quiet night from Anthony Edwards. Ayo Dosunmu led Minnesota off the bench, Jaden McDaniels backed up his game two trash talk while the Nuggets got almost no help outside of Nikola Jokic. It ends up being an embarrassing loss for Denver as they fall 113-96.

Both teams were struggling to score out of the gate. Jokic was shooting often but not getting anything to fall. It took Denver over three minutes to get a bucket but they still trailed by only a couple points. The Nuggets looked a lot like they did in game two, settling for jumpers and not getting a lot of success. They had just four points in the first six minutes of the quarter and yet trailed by just six. Everything felt like a total battle on the offensive end while Minnesota’s lead crept up to double digits as they started to get some buckets. David Adelman called a timeout when the lead got up to twelve after another walk-in layup from the Wolves. He brought in Julian Strawther to try to inject some life into the scoring but Denver was absolutely frigid. As the quarter winded down they started to get a few points but still had some comically bad turnovers and continued to allow a layup line on defense. At the end of the first the Nuggets trailed 25-11.

Denver’s offense was a little better opening the second quarter but still had trouble getting to the basket or stopping the Wolves threes. The lead kept growing. Adelman was forced to take another timeout when it got up to 18 just before the halfway point of the quarter. Denver settled down on offense after that but still gave up way too many easy baskets on defense. Add in some more bad turnovers and it was looking grim. The lead grew past twenty as Minnesota made ten straight field goals. The Nuggets took another timeout, nothing was working. They started chipping away at the lead for a bit in the back half of the quarter with Jokic being the catalyst on offense, but they still struggled to get stops. The half ended with Jamal Murray dribbling out the possession and chucking a contested step back three that hit front iron. Very apropos of the first half. Heading to the locker room the Nuggets trailed 61-39.

The second half didn’t start very well for Denver. They continued to settle for jumpers and the lead continued to stay near two-dozen. The Nuggets calmed things down eventually and started to work on cutting into the lead again. They trimmed it back under twenty about halfway through the quarter but just couldn’t find any rhythm to put together an extended run. The Wolves kept the lead hovering around twenty. Denver started to look like they were ready to give up on the game. Everyone instead of Jokic was pretty much just standing and watching while Minnesota continued to get easy baskets. The lead got up past two dozen heading down the stretch of the third and it looked like it might be early garbage time in the fourth. Dosunmo continued to carry Minnesota’s bench unit and despite a mini-run from the Nuggets near the end of the quarter, the Wolves still led 88-68 at the end of three.

Minnesota’s offense was cold to start the fourth and the Nuggets bench group plus Murray was able to trim the lead a bit. Unfortunately, the offense started to degenerate to Murray forcing jump shots and he wasn’t hitting so the Nuggets comeback effort stalled out. Jokic came back in with the Nuggets down sixteen and looking to make one last gasp effort at getting back into the game. He kept the lead from getting back up in the two-dozen range but the Nuggets were running out of time and still looked like they had little energy to fight back. They kept the lead from expanding more but couldn’t cut into it enough to make a miracle feasible. At just under the four minute mark Adelman emptied the bench and conceded defeat. Garbage time added insult to injury with Jaden McDaniels getting a big slam and putting a cap on an ugly loss for Denver. Minnesota takes game three 113-96.
