A north suburban high school staff member was in critical condition Wednesday after a serious crash near campus as classes were being dismissed, police said, with officials calling the incident “tragic” as an investigation remains underway.
The incident unfolded about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in Buffalo Grove, with officers responding to a crash that originated on school grounds at Buffalo Grove High School.
According to police, a vehicle was attempting to leave the school parking lot onto Dundee Road when it left the roadway and hit a pole. The pole then struck a staff member, police said.
Buffalo Grove police officers immediately responded, authorities said, and provided emergency medical help. The staffer was then transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said.
As of Wednesday morning, the staff member remained in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
“This is a tragic incident which has deeply impacted our high school community,” Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds said in a release. “Our thoughts are with the staff member, their loved ones, and all those impacted during this difficult time.”
According to authorities, the driver of the car was cooperating.
Dundee Road was closed for nearly four hours after the incident. An investigation remains ongoing by the Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit and the Major Crash Assistance Team.
