IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Nine million dollars is headed to two local main streets to revitalize their downtowns.
The funding is part of Gov. Hochul’s New York Forward Program, which aims to boost the economies of downtowns across New York State.
Revitalizing Irondequoit
Irondequoit is getting $4.5 million from the program. According to the state, the funds will be used to turn the Titus-Cooper-Hudson commercial district into a more walkable town square.
“Crosswalks in general around the area because there’s a lot of crosswalks, but not a lot of them actually have stoplights and things. And it can be dangerous,” said neighbor PJ Little, who attends eighth grade near the corridor.
Little and his friends want to see the funds go toward more than just Irondequoit’s downtown, but to surrounding neighborhoods as well.
“All across the street of List Avenue, it just gets really, really dark at night. And it’d be great to see some street lights…Especially during the summer, it gets dark around like 9 p.m., but it gets dark. So walking home is kind of hard. It’s really hard to see,” said Amanda Volke, an eighth grader.
Village of Victor also receives funding
The Village of Victor is also getting $4.5 million. Mark Ferguson, co-owner of the Blue Dog Drink Company on Victor’s Main Street, said he saw that there was extra funding for revitalizing downtown, which is part of the reason he opened his business.
Ferguson said it would be nice to see improvements to help village pedestrians and traffic.
“The village has been very positive about listening to people and what they have to say, especially the smaller businesses. And I think traffic flow, that would be one thing. I think the walkability of being able to have somewhere safe – you know, we’re right around the corner from the high school – it’d be great to have the crosswalks [be] better and things like that,” Ferguson said.
At this time, it’s not exactly clear what each municipality will use the $4.5 million specifically for.
The City of Batavia also qualified for state funding for its downtown and is set to get $10 million through the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
