Chicago Cubs Lineup: Michael Conforto In, Seiya Suzuki Out

CUBS LINEUP — Dating back to Game 2 of the Phillies series last week, the Cubs have won five games in a row, while the Phillies have lost five straight. So here’s to both streaks continuing tonight with the first of four matchups between two old teams at Wrigley Field.

Colin Rea is on the mound for the Cubs (no opener this time), and he’ll be facing Aaron Nola, who gets the following Cubs lineup.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Moises Ballesteros, DH Michael Conforto, RF Miguel Amaya, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS

I do not think Seiya Suzuki is sitting tonight because he is 1-9 with 5Ks versus Aaron Nola, as that is far too small of a sample upon which to base a Cubs lineup decision. HOWEVER, because Suzuki is getting planned rest anyway, and because there are two lefty starting pitchers going for the Phillies this series, and because Michael Conforto has kind of beeing swinging it anyway, and because Aaron Nola is a traditional split righty … the swap makes as much sense tonight as it ever will.

And it’s not like anyone wants Moises Ballesteros to sit.

With that said, I do wonder if Suzuki will be the pinch-hitter for Ballesteros if the Phillies bring in a lefty to face him. Matt Shaw has gotten most but not all of those chances, but you have to imagine they’d rather go with Suzuki (or even Carson Kelly) if the opportunity arises tonight.

Beyond that, it’s Miguel Amaya behind the plate and everyone else at their usual spots.

Keep the good times rolling, boys. Go Cubs.

    Philadelphia Phillies Lineup:

Trea Turner, SS Kyle Schwarber, DH Bryce Harper, 1B Adolis Garcia, RF Brandon Marsh, LF Alec Bohm, 3B Bryson Stott, 2B Justin Crawford, CF Rafael Marchan, C

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP

Colin Rea’s most recent “start” came against this very Phillies team, and it was a good one: 6.0 IP, 4H, 3ER, 0BB, 5K. Of course, Rea did benefit that time from a clean, 1-2-3 inning delivered by lefty opener Riley Martin. The Cubs used Martin in the first inning to get through the tough lefties at the top of the Phillies’ lineup (Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber), while limiting Rea’s exposure to those guys to just two plate appearances, instead of three, when the results tend to fall off dramatically.

Frankly, it worked so well I’m a little surprised the Cubs aren’t trying the same thing tonight.

Of course, working against that approach this week is the fact that the Cubs’ bullpen is even more depleted by injuries than it was a week ago, AND Riley Martin, in particular, is rising in importance because of his hot start. Still, can’t help but think a lefty opener might be the right call….

    Philadelphia Phillies: Aaron Nola, RHP

Technically speaking, Aaron Nola’s most recent start, which was against the Cubs in Philly, was one of his weakest of the young season. But because he’s Aaron Nola, that just doesn’t mean it was flat-out bad: 5.0 IP, 8H, 3ER, 2BB, 5K.

Obviously, he wasn’t dominant, but the 62.5% groundball rate, complete lack of barrels, 31.3 hard%, and .500 BABIP reveal a bit of a lucky streak for the Cubs.

That said, the Cubs lineup did just face this guy less than a week ago. Perhaps that will help them this time around.

To that end, two curent Cubs have significant enough matchup history to mention:

    Dansby Swanson (63 ABs): 14H, 4 2Bs, 3 HR, 4BB (13 K) Michael Conforto (53 ABs): 10H, 3 2Bs, 2 HR, 5BB (19K)

Ian Happ is also 0-18 against Nola, while Seiya Suzuki is 1-9 with 5Ks.
