1988 No. 1 Hit Song Blamed for Cursing Baseball Team

Is the “Kokomo” curse the cause of the New York Mets current woes?

The team has lost 11 straight games, their longest losing streak since 2004. Their record is now 7-15, which is their worst start since going 6-15 in 1983.

While the Mets’ poor performance can be blamed on several factors (quiet bats, poor starting pitching and an ineffective bullpen), some are pointing to an alleged musical mistake made at Citi Field as part of a tribute to late Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson.

A user going by the handle FranklinBenecdict commented on a reddit thread highlighting the broadcast call of the team’s 10th straight loss by claiming the Mets’ woes are due to a blunder the team’s DJ made on the day of Brian Wilson’s death.

“I just want to say that the New York Mets are now 47-70 since playing ‘Kokomo’ on the day Brian Wilson died last June. The curse no one is talking about,” they wrote.

Others were quick to pile on, noting that Brian Wilson did not appear on that recording and had no hand in writing or producing the Beach Boys’ last big hit. The song was written for the soundtrack of the movie Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise, and became the band’s first No. 1 in 22 years and their last top 40 hit.

“Even disregarding the fact that Brian is not on that song … THATS THE FREAKING BEACH BOYS SONG YOU PICK?!” one fan wrote.

Another added, “God only knows what they were thinking,” playing on the title of another Beach Boys classic.

For the record, “Kokomo” was written by John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas; Scott MacKenzie, known for the 1967 hit “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair);” Beach Boys singer Mike Love, and producer Terry Melcher, the son of Doris Day. Melcher also produced the song.

Brian Wilson was working on his first solo album at the time and there’s conflicting stories about why he didn’t participate in the recording of “Kokomo.” He claimed that the band didn’t tell him about the recording session, but Love said that Brian wouldn’t participate in the recording unless his therapist/collaborator Eugene Landy was given credit as a producer/co-writer of the song.

However, it’s unclear whether the Mets’ DJ actually made the “Kokomo” blunder.

According to a post on X by Andy Martino of SportsNet New York, the Mets played the Beach Boys’ 1964 No. 1 hit “I Get Around,” a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love and produced by Wilson, after the top of the third inning as a tribute to the Beach Boys’ mastermind on June 11, 2025, the day Wilson died. Martino made no mention of “Kokomo,” nor did any of the commenters on his post. A post by Athlon Sports, which covered the team’s nod to Wilson, also made no mention of “Kokomo” being played.

Whatever the case, God only knows that New York Mets could use some good vibrations about now.
