Emma Brandenburg, a junior majoring in creative advertising, will begin her term as the 2026-27 editor-in-chief of The Crimson White on May 1. She was selected by the Media Planning Board in March.
“I’m really just excited for the community that we’ve already built here at The Crimson White and that we will continue to build next year,” Brandenburg said.
Some of her plans include expanding the investigative work on the news desk and adding a dating advice column to the paper. Brandenburg said she is inspired by The New York Times Modern Love Column.
Brandenburg has been with The Crimson White for three years. In her current role, she oversees the paper’s social media strategy as engagement editor.
“My understanding of social media and analytics has really allowed me to understand what everyone wants to see out of our newspaper for the next year,” she said.
During her two-year tenure as engagement editor, the paper has seen tremendous growth on social media. She has grown the accounts by over 5,000 followers, and has reached an audience of over 2 million people. The Crimson White also won an Associated Collegiate Press Multimedia Story of the Year for Social Media Storytelling, where Brandenburg posted breaking updates of a UA student that was detained by ICE.
Brandenburg began her time at the paper in 2023 as a contributing writer for the news desk, where she covered the Student Government Association, cuts to diversity, equity and inclusion and Druid City Pride.
Jacob Ritondo, current managing editor at The Crimson White, served as one of the editors on the news desk when Brandenburg was a writer. He said that Emma’s versatility as a writer is a characteristic he admires most.
“She can write pretty much anything she wants to, and write it extremely well,” he said.
Around the newsroom, Brandenburg is known for having a creative mind that can be applied to all aspects of the paper. In addition to writing stories and running the social media platforms, she frequently takes photos, draws graphics and designs pages.
Outside of The Crimson White, Brandenburg has served as the Media Coordinator for Capstone Agency and is an art director in the Minerva advertising portfolio program, where she has won numerous ADDY and Foliofest awards.
Mark Barry, director of the Minerva program, said that in addition to being a “phenomenal art director,” Brandenburg is known for her consistent problem solving skills.
“If there is a question that doesn’t have a defined answer, she’s really good at coming up with the best possible answer,” Barry said. “She’s got all the pieces as far as leadership. She’s got everything it takes.”
Barry and Ritondo agreed that Brandenburg’s personality will aid her in her newsroom success. Barry said that he doesn’t know a single student that doesn’t like her, and that she is always in high demand when it comes to partner work in Minerva.
“She takes steps to make you know she cares about you,” Ritondo said. “Her personality lends itself to making people want to work at the paper and engage with the community.”
In her role as Editor-in-Chief, Brandenburg will work closely with Monique Fields, the editorial advisor at the Office of Student Media. Fields said that she is looking forward to watching Brandenburg shape the publication to serve and reflect the community.
“The Crimson White, like many student-led newspapers, now shoulders more of the editorial responsibility to cover local, regional, and national stories that were once largely covered by privately owned newspapers. I am confident Emma will approach this challenge with integrity and sound news judgment,” Fields said.
