Nico Freakin’ Hoerner, man!
Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th, ghost runner Pete Crow-Armstrong advanced to third on a wild pitch from old friend Craig Kimbrel. Dansby Swanson then struck out, giving way to one of baseball’s hottest hitters in Nico Hoerner, and for some reason, the Mets didn’t walk the Cubs’ All-Star second baseman. Nico promptly delivered a sacrifice fly to right field on the first pitch he saw, which delivered a 2-1 win and series sweep!
But they had to get to extras first. And that’s where a different hero came into play.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the 9th, Michael Conforto kept hope alive with a pinch hit (for Matt Shaw) RBI double to the right field corner that drove in Scott Kingery (pinch running for Ian Happ) and sent the game to extras at 1-1.
Caleb Thielbar shut things down in a high-leverage spot for the second straight game, working a scoreless 10th that ended with a strikeout of Luis Torrens on a high, 95mph fastball.
It wasn’t a beauty contest win, but it was still a win. The Cubs’ offense struggled with just seven hits, but Conforto continues to show up here and there after his slow start, and Hoerner continues to be awesome and play at an All-Star level.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game goes Nico Hoerner. Along with his game-winning sacrifice fly, Hoerner made a sound decision on defense in the bottom of the 10th, choosing not to try and throw out Marcus Semien on a slow-rolling groundball as MJ Melendez advanced and rounded third base. Big things, small things, things in between, Nico Hoerner does most all the things and does them really well.
When thinking beyond the drama of the 9th and 10th innings, shoutout to Javier Assad for bouncing back today with a quality start, finishing: 5.2IP, 3H, 1ER, 3K. Props to the bullpen as well. Jacob Webb, Riley Martin, and Corbin Martin all worked scoreless innings (Webb got four outs) after Assad departed.
