Streak Series, Timely Taillon, Carlson Re-Signs, Bullpen Bonanza, and Other Cubs Bullets

Did you wake up with a little bounce in your step today? I know I did. It’s a beautiful Sunday, and with a win today, the Cubs will sweep the New York Mets, winning their fifth straight game and handing the Mets their 11th straight loss.

What a difference a week(-ish) can make! As Michael pointed out in a special way yesterday, despite the Cubs’ season “ending” after their loss to the Pirates on April 11, they’re still playing, they’re winning, and many promising developments have or are unfolding with this team. Such as the Cubs being third in MLB in run differential (+29), Nico Hoerner playing like an MVP, Shota Imanaga looking like the 2024 version of himself, and more. After yesterday’s 6-inning, quality start that yielded just one run, Jameson Taillon looks like he may be dialing things in. Besides his last start, when he gave up a grand slam to Oneil Cruz and allowed six earned runs, he’s otherwise been good this season. Yesterday, though, his curveball, sweeper, and kick change all looked great at times, as did the fastball. No, it wasn’t a perfect outing, and Taillon isn’t all of a sudden going to become a Cy Young Award challenger, but if he is dialing things in (by his standards), it’s obviously at a much-needed time, given the volume of injuries to the pitching staff.

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 18, 2026 Outfielder Dylan Carlson was designated for assignment this past Tuesday when Seiya Suzuki returned from the Injured List. He ultimately elected free agency and apparently did not find a suitor offering a better situation than the Cubs. Carlson is serviceable, mildly intriguing, outfield depth for reasons previously discussed; 27 years old, good athlete, switch-hitter, once a promising prospect, etc. Curious to see how he can produce at Triple-A with regular playing time.

The Cubs have signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a minor league contract. Carlson was recently designated for assignment by the Cubs and opted to become a free agent. He's landed back with the Cubs, was sent to the @IowaCubs where @jkempradio reports he's in today's lineup.

    — Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) April 18, 2026 Caleb Thielbar played the role of closer yesterday in the Cubs’ 4-2 win over the Mets and looked great, getting three straight outs that included two strikeouts. Ben Brown allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief yesterday and received praise from his manager afterwards. Yesterday, Jacob wrote about Riley Martin being deserving of more high-leverage opportunities. Hoby Milner has allowed a run in just one of his nine appearances, and there was a scoreless debut inning of relief from Ryan Rolison in Philadelphia on Tuesday. I point all that out to point out that there’s as much opportunity in the Cubs bullpen right now as there may be (let’s hope so) at any point this season. Luke Little knows all too well the sort of opportunities that exist at present, because he’s squandered them before. Meanwhile, can Ben Brown become the reliever he seems to have the potential to be? Will Riley Martin establish himself as a high-leverage, “circle of trust” bullpen arm? Does one of Corbin Martin, Rolison, or Little make it hard to send them back down? The opportunity is plentiful, and while it may involve some white knuckles, I’m intrigued by the good that can develop from the circumstances.

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 18, 2026 Talking bullpen and pitching depth, Jordan Wicks made his first rehab start at Triple-A yesterday and looked good. I-Cubs play-by-play broadcaster Jason Kempf shared that in a 1-2-3 first inning, Wicks’ fastball topped out at 94mph. I know some have soured on Wicks, but in hindsight, it’s been questionable how the Cubs have deployed him. He’s got to earn it, of course, but I’d look forward to seeing him have another shot with the big league club.

    Great start to the Major League rehab assignment for Jordan Wicks: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 37 pitches – 24 strikes ? pic.twitter.com/LKRoqUlxqf

    — Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) April 18, 2026 More proof Nico Hoerner is awesome.

Kind of random, but shows how good Nico Hoerner has been. He's the only Cub to have 20 hits, 15 RBI & 5 SB in team's first 20 games of a season (since 1920).Signed an extension and has been awesome. pic.twitter.com/TNAhReB9jn

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 18, 2026 A favorable matchup for the Cubs today, with a series sweep up for grabs.

Sounds like the Cubs will face Tobias Myers tomorrow, instead of the previously scheduled David Peterson. Myers, who went to the Mets from the Brewers in the Freddy Peralta deal, has allowed nine earned runs in 17.1 innings against the Cubs in his career. t.co/gbKNmVFksY

    — Wrigley Winds (@WrigleyWinds) April 19, 2026 The Josiah Hartshorn hype continued to grow last night. The 19-year-old prospect hit this homerun (his 2nd this season) at 108mph. He’s now hitting .319/.492/.553 with a 1.045 OPS.

    — Myrtle Beach Pelicans (@Pelicanbaseball) April 18, 2026 Also at Low-A Myrtle Beach, third baseman Cole Mathis swatted his 7th homerun of the season 105mph to the opposite field. The 22-year-old Mathis is hitting .294/.439/.765 (a 1.204 OPS) and should be getting a promotion to High-A South Bend any day now.

    — Myrtle Beach Pelicans (@Pelicanbaseball) April 19, 2026 Catcher Owen Ayers has also been among the scorching hot group of prospects early this season, and his homerun binge continued last night in South Bend’s 12-5 win over Beloit. twitter.com/sbcubs/status/2045643399059894536 JD on a tiny mic to brighten your Sunday.

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 19, 2026 The NL Central has wasted no time being dramatic this season.

The Cincinnati Reds, off to their best 21-game start (13-8) in 20 years, are alone in first place in the NL Central after the Pirates blew a four-run lead and lost in 13 to the Rays.
