Several months ago, I reviewed a remarkable device that brings me a lot of joy during the year. The Kiwibit Beako Smart Bird Feeder. This makes it possible for you to watch all your feathered friends up close and personal. It’s been a wonderful addition to our home and I’m so excited to be reviewing the next iteration of the product: the Kiwibit Beako Bird Feeder 2.

Just like its predecessor, the Kiwibit Bird Feeder 2 is a modern take on backyard birdwatching. It blends a traditional feeder with a high-resolution smart camera and AI-powered identification. Designed for both casual observers and enthusiasts, it captures 4K video and detailed images of visiting birds while automatically recognizing species and sending real-time notifications to your phone.

The built-in solar panel helps keep the internal battery charged with minimal maintenance, while Wi-Fi connectivity allows for live viewing, playback, and sharing clips directly from a mobile app. With support for local storage and optional cloud services, users have flexibility in how they manage and access their footage.

Beyond the tech, the feeder itself is built for everyday use, with a weather-resistant design, multiple mounting options, and compartments that can accommodate different types of bird seed. The result is a product that aims to make birdwatching more interactive, informative, and easy to integrate into daily life without requiring constant attention or upkeep.

    User Experience

The first thing I wanted to do in this review was look at the differences between the two models. I have included a small chart that calls out the main differences, but the biggest change is the built-in solar panel on the roof of the birdhouse. With the first-gen model, I have the detached solar panel sitting next to the feeder. It has worked, but also been a bit problematic at times. So, the built-in solar panel is a big benefit in my mind. Overall, I do feel that the second-gen model is a nice upgrade from the original.

The setup of the Bird Feeder 2 is very similar to the original, but because I had done it once before, I didn’t feel as intimidated as I did the first time. There are a lot of parts, but if you identify the method you plan to use for mounting the bird feeder, most of the parts become obsolete.

I chose to use the tree-strap method and attached it to our deck. The first-gen model is attached to the other end of the same deck. Since I already knew the birds liked that area, I thought it made sense to add a second feeder to that area. As it turned out, it was a great plan!

Since we’ve installed Bird Feeder 2, it has recorded 275 bird encounters from 7 different species from our two feeders. The second-gen version has recorded 111 videos. We mounted it in early April when the birds were finally starting to be more active because of the spring-like weather.

You connect to your bird feeder by using the Kiwibit app. It’s a free app, but without Kiwibit Plus, you don’t get the bird recognition feature, which is one of the reasons I love this particular system so much. If you don’t purchase Kiwibit Plus you will still get the Live 4k streaming, motion alerts, short recorded clips, and basic app access and viewing. You just can’t build a long-term bird log, have the feeder identify species automatically, and save a more detailed history.

I’ve been very happy with how well this bird feeder works. I’ve been able to connect to it easily and the camera signal has been very clear. There is a slight delay in connecting to the Bird Feeder 2 but I believe that is due to the distance from the house. It does seem to stay connected to our WiFi well, but I am not getting a full WiFi signal based on how far out in the yard it is.

Loading the seed hopper is easy and the birds seem to have no issues with landing and resting on the frame of the feeder. The feeder does have dual hopper, which means you can use two different types of bird food if you want. Besides the amazing birds we’ve been able to see we also found that the feeder is now home to a very furry little friend who comes by daily. Image below.

    Sometimes squirrels visit as well.

    Conclusion

The Kiwibit Bird Feeder 2 builds on the original Beako with a smoother, more practical overall experience. The core features are still here, but the improvements to the built-in solar setup and everyday usability make it easier to live with day to day. Add in a solid app, reliable connection, and flexible mounting options, and the Bird Feeder 2 feels like a more finished, well-rounded product. Overall, it’s a simple but meaningful upgrade that makes backyard birdwatching more enjoyable and a lot less hands-on.
