Sergio Villegas and his wife reached one of their biggest life achievements when they purchased their first home in Chicago. Villegas worked and saved for 11 years to make their dream come true.
But excitement was the last thing they felt when they got their January water bill and saw an astounding $17,395 charge.
“Normally its $103, maybe less,” Villegas told NBC 5 Responds. “We’ve just been nonstop trying to figure out how we can explain this bill.”
The family got in touch with the city to appeal, but were ultimately told they still owe more than $16,000.
Villegas went to city hall in person to dispute the charges. Still, no luck.
Standing at the entry way of city hall, Villegas said “I feel helpless and I want an answer.”
While NBC 5 Responds and Telemundo Responde got in contact with the city, Villegas went to the office of 31st Ward Alderman Félix Cardona. Alderman Cardona then helped coordinate another water inspection.
According to Villegas, during the city water inspection the alderman helped coordinate, his water meter was found underground. The inspector told him city employees may have read the meter of another address.
NBC Chicago asked the city of there was in fact a mix up with the meters and requested an interview with the city water management commissioner. Instead, the city sent a statement reading in part, “the Department of Finance has worked with the Department of Water Management again to revisit Mr. Villegas’ situation and has followed up with him directly.”
In the end, Villegas’ water bill that once stood at $17,395.26 was dismissed and the city credited his account $359.
If your water bills are based on estimates, the City of Chicago recommends you give them a call and request a visit from a city inspector. Inspectors can give you an actual reading on your bills and help avoid incorrect charges.
