You don’t hear about the abductor muscle too often, but we’re going to learn a little bit about it today.
As Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy just explained on the radio, Christian Yelich has strained that particular muscle – which connects at the top of the hamstring, says Murphy – and will be out “a while”:

— 620 WTMJ (@620wtmj) April 14, 2026The abductor and adductor, per some Googling, are responsible for moving the leg away from, and back in toward, the midline of the body. They work in concert with the hamstring and groin to give you all that nice mobility in the upper part of your leg.
We don’t yet know the severity of Yelich’s strain, but it sounds like the recovery timelines are similar to that of a hamstring strain (i.e., mild/grade one is about three to four weeks, moderate/grade two is about six to eight weeks, and severe/grade three can be three or four months or more, depending on whether surgical intervention is necessary). The loss is significant for a Brewers team that is already currently without Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn, though both are expected back sooner rather than later.
The Cubs and Brewers still don’t face each other for another month, but obviously any impact to the Brewers could indirectly affect all of the teams in the NL Central.
Yelich, 34, had been hitting .314/.375/.451/126 wRC+ in the early going.
