The first finals session for the 2026 Pan Pac Championships are here. It is a busy schedule with the meet being only four days with five individual events on each side and one relay to conclude the session.

The two training partners out of Virginia enter as favorites for tonight as no other swimmer was sub-25.5. Ben Armbruster (22.92), Gui Caribe (22.96), Van Mathias (22.99), and Michael Andrew (23.01) were separated by less than a tenth this morning in the men’s 50 fly setting up a showdown for tonight.
Australia’s Lani Pallister led the way in prelims of the 200 free with a 1:55.29 and is one of five 1:55s from this morning that will be racing tonight. Notably also in the final is Summer McIntosh of Canada as McIntosh opted for the 200 free over the 200 fly, an event she holds the World Record in, on day 1 of competition here in Irvine. McIntosh is the #4 seed for tonight after swimming a 1:55.85 this morning. Pallister has a busy night as she also is scheduled to conclude the session with the 1500 free.
Luke Hobson of the US was under World Record pace at the 150 mark of the men’s 200 free this morning but fell off record pace on the final 50. Hobson is the top seed with a 1:44.31 in tonight’s final and has been as fast as a 1:43.73 in the event, a time that sits as the US Open record.
Regan Smith posted another 57-point backstroke swim leading prelims with a 57.86. Fellow American Katharine Berkoff is the #2 seed after a 58.09 this morning. Smith holds the World Record in the race with a 57.13. Notably absent from the meet is Kaylee McKeown of Australia who battles Smith and Berkoff in the backstroke races. The men’s 100 back saw Canada’s Blake Tierney lead the way with a 53.13 in prelims, just faster than Will Modglin‘s 53.17.
Alex Shackell and Tess Howley both swam season bests in the 200 fly for the US to claim the middle lanes as Shackell swam a 2:06.68 and Howley swam a 2:07.13. No one else was under 2:09 this morning.
Luca Urlando (1:54.13) and Carson Foster (1:54.72) claimed the top two spots on the men’s side of the 200 fly, and no one else was under 1:55. Notably scratching the ‘A’ final of the men’s 200 fly was Australia’s Se-Bom Lee who swam the 9th fastest time of prelims with a 1:59.34 but would have been the #7 seed tonight. Kai Whelan of South Africa takes lane eight after swimming a 2:05.24 this morning.
Elijah Winnington posted a 7:50.11 as the fastest time in the 800 free of the timed final heats this morning. The top eight seeds will dive in tonight as Sam Short‘s entry time of a 7:36.73 leads the way.
Fellow Australian Molly Walker led this morning’s 1500 free on the women’s side with a 16:10.58. Katie Ledecky is the top seed with a 15:20.48 while #2 seed Lani Pallister is entered with a 15:39.14. Pallister is the top seed of the 200 free earlier in the session, so she will have a busy evening.
