Chicago Cubs Lineup: Quick! Hide All the Lefties!

CUBS LINEUP — The Phillies and Cubs are both a disappointing 7-8 to start the season, and I fear this series might offer more of an advantage to them than us. While the Phillies are sending three of their best starters, including Christopher Sanchez tonight, to the mound (at home, no less), the Cubs are countering with their 6th and 7th starters, including Javier Assad tonight.

Obviously, both Assad and Colin Rea (throwing tomorrow) have had their success with the Cubs in the past, so maybe they can keep it going. But if you were already worried about the Cubs’ offense, this week might not make you feel too much better. Just keep that in mind.

In the meantime, here’s a look at the Cubs lineup against the veteran southpaw, Sanchez, for tonight’s game in Philadelphia.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Nico Hoerner, 2B Alex Bregman, 2B Seiya Suzuki, DH Ian Happ, LF Carson Kelly, 1B Dansby Swanson, SS Miguel Amaya, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Matt Shaw, RF

The good thing about Nico Hoerner leading off all the time is that there’s one fewer Cubs lineup change when they face a lefty pitcher. But there are still several key substitutions tonight. The most prominent is another night off for Michael Busch.

Although the Cubs first baseman already got a day off (yesterday), his slump was pretty deep. Coming back just to face Sanchez, then, wouldn’t be doing him any favors. So, in his place, Carson Kelly is playing first, opening up catcher for Miguel Amaya.

Seiya Suzuki is also in this lineup (which is nice), but he’s covering DH for Moises Ballesteros. And that, in turn, leaves right field open for Matt Shaw.

In the long run, I think the Cubs would LOVE to have the confidence to start both Michael Busch and even Moises Ballesteros against lefties. But for now, this is the correct way to go. Counsell is playing the matchups and doing it to the extreme, which is nice to see. It’s a long season, but let’s try to win each game, yeah?

Pete Crow-Armstrong’s defense in center field keeps him in the Cubs lineup tonight, but he’s the only natural lefty in there. My bet is that one of (if not both) Ballesteros and Busch wind up in this game before all is said and done.

    Philadelphia Phillies Lineup:

Trea Turner, SS Kyle Schwarber, DH Bryce Harper, 1B Adolis Garcia, RF Brandon Marsh, LF Alec Bohm, 3B Bryson Stott, 2B JT Realmuto, C Justin Crawford, CF

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

We’re not happy that Javier Assad has been forced into the Cubs rotation after a rash of injuries (Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd), plus one outstanding (Justin Steele). But boy, is it nice to have him around. The same goes for tomorrow’s starter, Colin Rea.

Indeed, Assad’s first start with the Cubs this season went about as good as anyone could’ve reasonably hoped, with 5.2 scoreless innings against the Rays in Tampa Bay. Assad struck out only 3, but walked just two and generated a massive 57.1% groundball rate. In front of this defense, that’ll play.

But the wind is blowing out tonight, and the Phillies are a tougher lineup than the Rays. So Assad will have his work cut out for him.

None of the Phillies have much of a history against Assad, though Harper is 3-6 plus a walk.

    Philadelphia Phillies: Christopher Sanchez, LHP

Christopher Sanchez was one of the best pitchers in baseball last season, and he’s picked up right where he left off here in 2026:

    vsTEX: 6.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 0BB, 10K vsWSN: 5.1 IP, 4H, 1ER, 4BB, 7K @SFG: 5.0 IP, 11H, 2ER, 0BB, 6K

Generally speaking, Sanchez dominates lefties (of which there are many on the Cubs roster), but it’s not like righties have much more luck. He’s simply very good, and the Cubs lineup will just have to do its best to put some runs on the board, while hoping Assad can keep them in the game.
