Keenum’s Advice in Defeat, Bullied Ball, Trash Talk Continues, Ditka, and Other Bears Bullets

Chicago sports fans took some haymakers this weekend. In addition to watching the Bears get blasted by the Packers on Sunday, White Sox fans had to watch their team lose an ALDS elimination game in Cleveland after blowing a 2-0 series lead; the Blackhawks were dealt another loss; Sky fans watched Angel Reese reach the WNBA Finals with her new team; and Cubs fans watched the Brewers beat the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS.

Also, I dropped a bottle of olive oil on my foot. The bruising isn’t pretty.

So, I ask: Did anyone have a good weekend?

So … this is what it feels like to be on the receiving end of bully ball. One week after having their way with the New York Jets, the Chicago Bears were thoroughly beaten by the Green Bay Packers in every phase of the game in Week 5. Green Bay beat Chicago at its own game by mixing long drives with explosive plays. I’m not sure which was more demoralizing. The jabs and the haymakers all felt the same to me. They all hurt.

A SPLASH OF GOOD NEWS: NFL insider Ian Rapoport says all signs point to Caleb Williams returning THIS WEEK against the Atlanta Falcons. Given how Tyson Bagent has performed in his two starts, seeing this news was the best way to start my Monday. In Week 4, Bagent showed that he could manage a game. And the numbers suggested that he did a little more than that. It was a nice game that set a solid foundation to build on in Week 5. Unfortunately, Bagent failed to build on that performance and showed that he shouldn’t be asked to do more than be a game manager. His arm strength limitations and processing issues were key factors in Chicago’s loss to Green Bay. To be clear, he isn’t the sole reason the Bears lost. But his play was a major issue. But Keenum was tasked with cleaning up a mess that he didn’t make in a game that was essentially over. Sunday was a no-win situation for anyone affiliated with the Bears:

    — Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) October 11, 2026 Words of wisdom from Keenum (via the Sun-Times):

“You don’t last very long in this league if you don’t know how to get back up when you’ve had your ass kicked. That’s just the way it is. There’s really good players, really good coaches, really good teams, and if you last long enough, it’s just a matter of time that you’re going to get your ass kicked.

“It’s not about that. It’s about how you respond. I expect him to respond like he knows how to. It’s adversity to learn from. It’s an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and move on and not make them again.”

While this is good advice that I hope Bagent takes to heart, this message is something I hope everyone else in the Bears locker room heard.

Because some of you asked, the Bears can get out of Bagent’s contract next offseason and create $4.25 million in cap space while taking on a $500,000 dead cap hit. I’m not saying that is what I would do. But I understand why so many people asked about his deal after what was put on tape the last two weeks. Jaylon Johnson is another player Bears fans were vocal about wanting cut after Sunday’s performance. We’ll do some deeper diving on Johnson and the secondary later. But for those of you who care about his contract situation, cutting Johnson right now would cause the Bears to lose $1.1 million in cap space while also taking on a $25.6 million dead money hit. Cutting Johnson now would be financially irresponsible. Plus, with injuries elsewhere in the secondary, cutting a healthy cornerback would be silly. This isn’t to say things should operate normally moving forward. But cutting bait with the guy right now just doesn’t make sense. This offseason, a Johnson cut would create $16 million in cap space at the cost of a $9 million dead money hit. If Johnson’s play continues to trend negatively, then that is a bridge we can cross when we lay out an offseason road map. To be clear, I’m nowhere near ready to get that going. We’re just five games into this season, and the Bears have a winning record. There is no need to go down that road right now. Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn Images Whenever Cairo Santos misses a kick, questions from fans about his contract status emerge. Because I know some of you are curious, the Bears could cut Santos now and clear $2.64 million in cap space. But they’d take a $1.12 million dead money hit and need to find a new kicker in the middle of the season. If Santos has a prolonged stretch of struggles, then I’d be open to it. But I’m not ready to pull that lever just yet. That said, Chicago could cut Santos next offseason and create $3.2 million in cap savings — all while dealing with a dead cap hit of just $560,000. That seems more palatable if push comes to shove. Santos didn’t even have the worst day among kickers. Trey Smack missed two field goals and an extra point, as Green Bay’s kicking woes continue. Luther Burden III had a rough day. Sure, he led the Bears in receiving. But he also got hit with some post-game trash talk. For starters, this quote from Packers linebacker Zaire Franklin (via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman):

“We see all the little weird stuff they be doing in the media and all the different stuff they be saying. You got guys that never really made a real play in this league talkin’ ’bout making somebody quit. That’s weird. We don’t do that. He quit today, by the way. He ain’t wanna play anymore. But we focused on ourselves, man. We ain’t really worried about that. We ain’t play that in a team meeting or nothing. We just focused on ourselves, being the best version of ourselves and we put out a good performance today because of that.”

And then this exchange on Instagram was captured by a Packers reporter:

    — Jacob Morley (@JacobMorley) October 12, 2026 Given how Anthony Davis’ tenure ended with New Orleans, he is the last person I want to hear from about not wanting to play. That said, I’ll be curious to see how Burden responds on the field because what you do is far more valuable than what you say. Let’s wrap this up with some Mike Ditka stories and memorials:
