Carson Kelly played hero with a (smashed) game-winning “single” to the warning track in right-center with the bases loaded, and one out in the bottom of the 9th, and the Cubs actually completed their comeback today in a 7-6 win against the Pirates.
Was it the slump-busting performance we’ve been dying for from the offense? No. Was it enough to win today’s game? Thankfully, yes.
After going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position yesterday, the Cubs managed a 3-for-12 mark today, with Michael Busch (yes, the previously 0-for-30 Michael Busch) coming through in the bottom of the 8th with a (for Matt Shaw) pinch hit, RBI single floated into shallow left-center to tie it 6-6.
Daniel Palencia locked things down in the top of the 9th and a Michael Conforto leadoff double, Alex Bregman infield hit, and Seiya Suzuki walk loaded the bases for Kelly’s heroics.
10 hits in total and 10 left on base for the Cubs today amidst hitter-friendly conditions. Dansby Swanson and Moises Ballesteros took advantage of today’s weather, hitting 391-foot and 427-foot homeruns in the bottom of the 3rd.
Jameson Taillon allowed too much traffic on the bases, particularly on a weather day like today, and it bit him in the top of the 2nd when Brandon Lowe hit a grand slam after a Marcell Ozuna single, walk to Spencer Horwitz and a plunking of Konnor Griffin. Taillon gets a pat on the back for bearing down afterwards, though, and still recording 18 outs, finishing: 6.0IP, 6H (3HR), 6ER, 2BB, 10K.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is, of course, Carson Kelly. Kelly finished 2-for-5 with a sharp double in the bottom of the 4th. He’s hitting .308 so far and looking a lot like he did last season at the plate, which is great.
