Caleb Thielbar can’t catch a break this series.
Tied 3-3 in the top of the 11th with runners on 1st and 2nd, Thielbar’s throw to 1st on a comeback groundball was low and wide for Matt Shaw (no, I don’t think Michael Busch would’ve gloved it either) and Nick Gonzales scored what proved to be the game-winning run.
A bases-loaded, two-out at-bat in the bottom of the 11th from Seiya Suzuki resulted in a flyout to first baseman Ryan O’Hearn, leaving us with another what could have been, what should have been loss to the Pirates.
In the game-extending bottom of the 9th, Dansby Swanson and Carson Kelly — pinch-hitting for a seriously struggling Michael Busch — both walked. Alex Bregman followed with a game-tying RBI single over the 2nd baseman’s head into right-center field, scoring Swanson and sending the game into extras.
Pirates’ starter Braxton Ashcraft was impressive, finishing with a line of: 5.0IP, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 9K. His curveball was particularly devastating to the Cubs’ hitters, but his ability to use it as a put-away and a get-me-over strike was attention-grabbing.
Edward Cabrera wasn’t as sharp in his third start of the season, dealing with traffic on the bases most of the afternoon, allowing eight hits and three walks, finishing: 5.0 IP, 3ER, 4K.
Not too different from yesterday’s loss, the Cubs’ offense — via walks or hits — could hardly string anything together, evidenced by RBI groundouts scoring two of their three runs. And with weather conditions again favoring pitchers, home runs proved to be a non-factor in this one.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is the Pirates’ Oneil Cruz, who went 4-for-5 and was (smartly) intentionally walked by the Cubs in the top of the 11th. Cruz also stole a career-high three bases in the game, exposing Edward Cabrera’s trouble holding runners.
