Dillingham Unpacks Bulls Journey, Giddey Talks Chicago Changes, Sky Sign New Bigs, and Other Bulls Bullets

The Chicago Bulls’ 127-103 blowout loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday night helped the tanking club get back on the losing track.

The 32-49 Milwaukee Bucks, meanwhile, beat the Brooklyn Nets. Thus, the 31-50 Bulls now move a game ahead of our neighbors to the north in Tankathon’s reverse draft standings. Chicago now has the ninth-best odds of nabbing a top-four pick or securing the top selection in the summer’s draft.

But Chicago didn’t get out of the game unscathed. Second-year forward Matas Buzelis, the team’s most promising young player, departed with an ankle sprain.

Point guard Rob Dillingham was selected with the No. 8 pick out of Kentucky in the 2024 NBA Draft but subsequently buried on the Minnesota Timberwolves’ bench. The 21-year-old has enjoyed extended run since arriving in Chicago. Happily, he’s been afforded the opportunity to play through his mistakes. In 27 minutes Friday, he scored 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field (1-of-5 from distance) and 4-of-4 shooting from the foul line, four rebounds, and a steal — while logging three personal fouls and two turnovers.

“It’s honestly a blessing [to be in Chicago],” Dillingham told Roundtable’s Gavin Dorsey on Thursday. “They work with me. They help me progress. I feel like I belong here and they want me here. As long as they’re all with me, I’m going to keep giving it my all, for sure.”

Bulls owner Michael Reinsdorf seemed to suggest during a rare press conference on Tuesday that new prospects for the team’s president and general manager openings would need to be open to longtime head coach Billy Donovan sticking around. Some pundits around the league were critical of Reinsdorf’s commitment to a coach who, while a Hall of Famer, has posted a middling 226-255 regular season record and advanced Chicago to the playoffs just once. Across his 11 pro head coaching seasons, in fact, Donovan has only led a team beyond the first round a single time — the Western Conference Finals-bound Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016. When asked to clarify his remarks by Joel Lorenzi and Jon Greenberg of The Athletic, Reinsdorf explained over email that Donovan’s tenuous future with the franchise won’t actually “take precedence” as the team seeks new front office leadership.

“The point I was making is that he is a good coach,” Reinsdorf told The Athletic. “I don’t think there’s a candidate out there who would not want to interview with us because I’d like Billy to remain as our coach.”

Rookie lottery pick forward Noa Essengue, still just 19, has missed most of the season while recuperating from a shoulder injury. Even before he went down, the Frenchman had been on the outside of Donovan’s roster looking in. Still, Essengue has apparently improved in one big way. Donovan believes that he has grown taller than his 6-foot-8 listed height, according to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune. $100 million Bulls point guard Josh Giddey has weighed in on the club’s dismissal of team president Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley, according to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley.

‘‘I understand the business side of basketball and, just like players when we’re not performing or living up to expectations, kind of the nature of the business,’’ Giddey said. ‘‘Obviously, I built a relationship with [Karnisovas] and Marc while they were here, and I appreciate everything they did for me — bringing me here, extending me. So [I’m] very grateful for my time with them. But it’s part of the business, and that’s how it goes sometimes.”

So does Giddey want Chicago to retain Donovan, whom Michael Reinsdorf is making a strange push to prioritize even over his next front office hire?

‘‘I’ve loved him ever since I got here. He’s been very straightforward, and I think all the guys would say the same thing. He’s very direct,” Giddey offered. “You see how competitive he is on the sidelines. I couldn’t speak highly enough about him. I hope he’s here for a long time.’’

Chicago’s other Aussie, two-way big man Lachlan Olbrich, drew his first-ever start during the team’s penultimate contest Friday. Across 32 minutes, he notched six points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 0-of-4 shooting from the foul line, nine rebounds, five assists, one steal, and a block. WNBA free agency has been fast-tracked this year following the league’s prolonged CBA negotiations. Our Chicago Sky have stayed busy building out the rest of their revamped roster. After a bizarre trade of two-time All-Star power forward Angel Reese, ESPN’s Chiney Ogwumike reports that the Sky have inked All-Defensive Team center Elizabeth Williams to a two-year, $1.2 million deal — a smidge under half the league’s new max. The Sky are prioritizing their frontline, despite in theory de-cluttering the paint for Kamilla Cardoso via the Reese deal. Alexa Philippou of ESPN reveals that the club is reuniting with 2021 champion power forward/center Azurá Stevens. Stevens finished second in Most Improved Player voting last season with the Los Angeles Sparks, and the 29-year-old is now inking a three-year contract to return to Chicago. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images The team is also looking to bring back another vet, allegedly. Forbes’ Roberta F. Rodrigues writes that Chicago has been talking to 35-year-old Seattle Storm point guard Skylar Diggins about a possible deal. Stevens and co. actually defeated Diggins in the 2021 Finals while she was an All-Star and All-WNBA First Teamer on the Phoenix Mercury. A seven-time All-Star and six-time All-WNBA Team honoree, Diggins would represent an upgrade over Courtney Vandersloot and Hailey Van Lith at the position, but her age makes her more of a temporary solution than a long-term fit. Newly minted Hall of Fame head coach Doc Rivers has claimed on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back” that his Milwaukee Bucks did not actually get close to trading embattled 10-time All-Star power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo at this year’s deadline. He also took a swipe at ESPN’s Shams Charania while rejecting the rumor.

. @DocRivers says the Bucks were NOT close to trading Giannis at the deadline ?‍♂️"I hate to keep throwing Shams under the bus, but that's what he was upset at. … Was there talk? Absolutely. Were we close to pulling the trigger? No."@MichelleDBeadle | @ChandlerParsons |… pic.twitter.com/h7aOcAinJY

    — Run It Back (@RunItBackFDTV) April 10, 2026 The Philadelphia 76ers just can’t catch a break. Former 2023 MVP center Joel Embiid, who has missed most of the season with health issues again, went under the knife for an appendectomy on Thursday. Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the seven-time All-Star has no concrete recovery timeline. It seems likely that he’d miss all of the first round of the playoffs this spring. Two-time All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey fell on his left wrist during the club’s game against the Indiana Pacers last night and had to depart for the locker room mid-contest, although he’s pledged to play through the ailment during the postseason. Will the banged-up squad even be able to advance beyond the play-in tournament now? Tony Jones of The Athletic reports that Philadelphia is cutting one ex-Bull to make room on its standard roster for another. The 76ers are promoting forward Dalen Terry from his two-way deal, with a team option for next year. To accommodate his addition on the standard roster, Philadelphia will waive backup point guard Cameron Payne.
