The second night of finals from the 2026 European Championships promises to be another exciting one as the session kicks off with four straight individual finals after there was only one on Day 1.
European titles will be decided in the women’s 200 back, men’s 50 fly, women’s 100 free and men’s 100 breast during the first 20 minutes of the session, and then we’ll see semis in the women’s 100 breast and 50 fly, and the men’s 200 back and 100 free, before the night concludes with finals in the women’s 800 free and the mixed 4×100 medley relay.
In the women’s 200 back, Katie Shanahan has established herself as the favorite after leading the semis in 2:07.61, while Camila Rebelo will also be in the hunt looking to defend the title she won in 2024.
The men’s 50 fly will be lightning fast after last night session produced the fastest set of semi-finals in history, with a blistering 22.75 being required to make the final. Leading the way is Egor Kornev, who set new Russian and European Championship Records in the semis in 22.36, ranking him #3 all-time.
World record watch will be on high alert in the women’s 100 free final, where Marrit Steenbergen comes in having broken the meet records in both the prelims (52.62) and semis (52.44). The Dutch star lowered the nine-year-old world record in June in a time of 51.68, and has been sub-52 three other times this year.
The men’s 100 breast features a loaded field with reigning Olympic champion and 2022 European gold medalist Nicolo Martinenghi joined by two-time Olympic and four-time European champ in the event Adam Ramsay-Peaty, both having broken 59 seconds in the semis.
Martinenghi led the field in 58.67, while Ireland’s Jack Kelly broke his national record for the second time in as many swims last night in 58.90 to claim the #2 seed, with Ramsay-Peaty close behind in third. In addition to Martinenghi and Peaty, a third European champion in the event, Melvin Imoudu, will be in the field, vying to defend his title after clocking 59.13 in the semis.
All four sets of semi-finals tonight have their own set of intrigue. Angharad Evans set a new meet record this morning in the women’s 100 breast (1:05.45), while up-and-coming Frenchman Nathan Muratory did the same in the men’s 200 back (1:54.87).
The women’s 50 fly semis mark the first evening swim of the meet for Swedish legend Sarah Sjostrom, who clocked 25.40 in the morning to lead the field as she returns to her first major international meet since giving birth last year.
Then, the men’s 100 free features another stacked field, with five men having broken 48 seconds in the prelims, and two-time defending champion David Popovici leading the way at 47.13.
Italian star Simona Quadarella is a big favorite to win her fourth European title in the women’s 800 free in the final individual race of the night, having relinquished the crown in 2024 when she opted not to compete at Euros.
The night will close with the mixed 4×100 medley relay, where the Russian Neutral Athletes B squad holds Lane 4 after dropping a time of 3:43.02 in the prelims, which is more than two and a half seconds faster than Israel went to win gold in 2024.
Neutral Athletes B also won gold at the 2025 World Championships in the event, while the Netherlands, Italy and Poland were the other European nations in the final. The Dutch and Polish teams will compete tonight, but Italy was disqualified in the prelims.
The British team, which won the first four Euro titles in this event from 2014 until 2021, are the #3 seed at 3:45.69, while France, which finished 4th at the Paris Olympics, is ranked #2 after going 3:44.27 in the morning.
