Good morning, Bleacher Nation. Here we are, 13 games in, and it already feels like a season-long grind will be necessary to win the division. Yes, it’s still too early to say for certain, but the cumulative effect of injuries and offensive struggles is formidable.
That said, it’s the weekend, and there’s baseball at 1:20 at the Federal Landmark. If Rory McIlroy can birdie six of the last seven holes at Augusta, the Cubs can win six of their next seven games, right? Right?!
"Maybe I could have gone to the 7th (inning), but regarding Counsell's decision, I agree with him … I think that was the right decision." Shota Imanaga on today's start. pic.twitter.com/1KnkRDtu1V
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 10, 2026 While this Pitcher List Stats graph rates Imanaga’s command versus right-handed batters a C+ yesterday, it looked to me like he was largely placing the fastball where he wanted, and I thought that made the splitter and sweeper more effective. The velocity remains “up” by his standards, too. The data and the eye test are both checking out, which, given the injury to Cade Horton, it goes without saying how much this Cubs team needs the 2024 version of Shota.Shota Imanaga (CHC) tossed six no-hit innings against the Pirates, striking out 9! pic.twitter.com/IoUdgAjukf
— Pitcher List Stats (@PitcherListPLV) April 10, 2026 As the Cubs weather injuries to Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd, Phil Maton, Jordan Wicks, Jaxon Wiggins, Porter Hodge, and Justin Steele, the respectable depth Jed Hoyer built is being tested. Colin Rea and Javier Assad have done an outstanding job in the brief amount of time they’ve been called on to step up; meanwhile, Ethan Roberts took Maton’s place in the bullpen and delivered 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in yesterday’s loss to the Pirates. I’m reasonably confident that Rea and Assad continue to prove they’re more than capable of stepping up into the roles they now find themselves in. I’m not quite as confident about Roberts, though, but there are more promising arms at Triple-A should he struggle. Meanwhile, there’s the unfortunate reality looming of yet another injury, and when all the possibilities and maybes are accounted for I’d be in for a Lucas Giolito signing at the right price.Do the Chicago Cubs Now Turn to Free Agent Righty Lucas Giolito? t.co/ZnNvghQ5rz
— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) April 9, 2026 Listening to the pregame show on the radio at work yesterday, my attention was caught by Craig Counsell discussing the plan to ease Seiya Suzuki back in as he returns from the knee injury suffered in the World Baseball Classic. I found that interesting since Seiya played five of the six games while he was in Double-A Tennessee on a rehab assignment. That’s not much of an “easing back in” rehab assignment. Meanwhile, we recently saw Ian Happ out of the lineup for two days with a heel injury. I say all that to say, I’m hoping these decisions are indicative of utilizing the depth that exists, instead of having players play through injuries. Which is something we’ve seen too much in recent seasons. The Cubs Figure to Ease Seiya Suzuki Back In t.co/dRKi4STuMT pic.twitter.com/OGYPIaN411
— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) April 11, 2026 Game two of the three-game series against the Pirates today features Edward Cabrera facing off against Braxton Ashcraft. Cabrera has yet to allow a run in his two starts, and his changeup has been at the center of his success in those two outings.Edward Cabrera's changeup is one of the most unique and valuable pitches in baseball. It's also a key to his success.
