Leading from the front. That’s the cliché line that commentators slap on every time a captain does well with the bat, ball, or in the field. Well, sometimes cliches aren’t wrong. Rajat Patidar indeed played a captain’s knock, saving the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from a precarious situation against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati.
RCB’s wayward batting
Undefeated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, RCB were billed as the favourites for the clash, although RR had yet to lose a match themselves. After a 70-minute rain delay, the match began at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, where RCB raced off to a quick start.
They were 32/1 after 2 overs. 45/2 after 3. The run rate was sky-high. But they’d lost two wickets, Phil Salt and Devdutt Padikkal, just 18 balls into the match. However, the game flipped. After the end of the powerplay, RCB were 61/3 after 6. They’d lost another wicket, a big one of Virat Kohli, and scored just 16 runs.
Now, they had to rebuild. But the pitch wasn’t easy to bat on. After Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger, Ravi Bishnoi got some assistance from the pitch. It had probably come to life due to the rain seeping into the surface. By the end of the 10th over, RCB had already gone 5 down, with Bishnoi taking another wicket and Brijesh Sharma joining the act.
While the surface wasn’t easy, the dismissals were mostly soft. Tim David walked with 9 overs still left. Romario Shepherd didn’t last long either. With 36 balls to spare, Patidar was left alone. At this stage, he was 27 (26), and RCB was 125/7. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the next man in.
Rajat Patidar & Venkatesh Iyer save the blushes
However, RCB decided that the runs weren’t enough. So, they brought Venkatesh Iyer as the impact substitute, hoping that he and Romario would bowl 4 overs, and his runs, along with Patidar’s, could be enough for RCB to perhaps come back into the game. And guess what? The move worked.

— IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 10, 2026In the next 2 overs, Patidar scored 23 off 10 balls, bringing up his half-century in 35 balls. He took down Bishnoi, who had given away just 16 runs in 3 overs and taken 2 wickets. The partnership was worth 41 runs in 3 overs. The job was done for the most part. Venkatesh’s presence allowed Patidar to break free.
There’s no way he could’ve played in a similar manner with Bhuvneshwar on the non-striker’s end. When Patidar fell on the first ball of the 18th over, RCB were 166/8. Venkatesh had scored just 5 runs. In the next two overs, he didn’t face many balls, as Bhuvneshwar couldn’t get off strike, and he didn’t find the middle of his bat.
But he made up for it. The southpaw scored 20 runs in the last over, taking RCB past 200 on the final ball of the innings. He remained unbeaten on 29 from just 15 balls. If RCB end up winning, it’ll be because they managed to score 76 runs in the last 6 overs.
