Only three Cubs minor league games to recap from Thursday, as Iowa and Omaha were rained out. They’ll play a doubleheader today. Elsewhere, Jefferson Rojas blasted a home run in a Knoxville win, while South Bend and Myrtle Beach suffered close losses. Let’s recap the action.

For the second straight day, the Smokies picked up a tight win over Rocket City. Thursday, though, they rallied from behind to pull off an epic comeback win. The Trash Pandas scored in each of the first three innings, then tacked on a couple more in the fifth and sixth to take a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, though, the comeback began.
With one out and the bases loaded in the sixth, Devin Ortiz ripped a bases-clearing double to get the Smokies on the board, cutting the deficit to 7-3. After a scoreless seventh, Ortiz came up clutch again with an RBI single to get the Smokies back on the board in the eighth. Following an Alex Ramirez sac fly to make it 7-5, Jefferson Rojas stepped up to the plate and blasted the big knock, a three-run shot to complete the comeback and put Knoxville up 8-7.
After taking the lead, Vince Reilly shut the door in the top of the ninth and finished off the win.

South Bend dropped a tight back-and-forth contest with Peoria on Thursday, 5-3. Owen Ayers and Reginald Preciado had the big days at the plate for the Cubs, with both reaching base three times each and Ayers going deep. The score was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but a pair of Chiefs home runs did the Cubs in. South Bend did add a run in the eighth to make it 4-3, but Peoria answered right back with another run of their own in the bottom half.
Christian Olivo led off the top of the ninth with a walk, but Kane Kepley then grounded into a double play, which effectively ended the threat.

Myrtle Beach and Columbia went at it in a pitchers’ duel on Thursday. Unfortunately, that duel went the way of the Fireflies, and the Pelicans suffered their first loss of the season.
Dominick Reid was outstanding on the mound, tossing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Rowell Arroyo relieved Reid, and unfortunately, he allowed the lone run of the ballgame – an unearned run that came after a baserunner reached on a throwing error.
The Pelicans bats were almost completely silent in the loss. Jose Escobar had the only Myrtle Beach hit of the matchup, while Jairo Diaz and Eli Lovich each drew a walk, but that was about it for the Pelicans in this one.
