Although his return does raise some questions for player usage, it’s inarguable that the Cubs are better with Seiya Suzuki back in the lineup as often as possible.
That said, because they do have Matt Shaw (able to play right field), Michael Conforto (able to play right field), and Moises Ballesteros (able to DH) available, the Cubs are in a position to ease Suzuki back into an everyday role:
Seiya Suzuki will not play everyday on his return ,per Craig Counsell.
— Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) April 10, 2026It’s not that you don’t want Suzuki in there as often as possible, or that you’re explicitly wanting to give starts to the other guys instead. But since they are AVAILABLE, and since Suzuki did miss time with the knee injury, why not take advantage of the situation a bit?
In other words, I’d tentatively expect to see Suzuki in there two out of three games or so for a while, and probably moving between DH and right field. Meanwhile, the Cubs will be able to use one of the other three at the spot not occupied by Suzuki that day, and two of the three on the days Suzuki sits. Throw in an occasional off-day for Ian Happ and for one of the infielders, and there should be plate appearances enough to go around for these guys to keep them sharp and productive (and to optimize lineups).
All that said, I think it’s probably one of those situations to monitor over the next few weeks. Although plenty of rest for Seiya Suzuki and some rotations will be the norm for a little while, we usually see these things settle pretty quickly into a discernible pattern. Suzuki’s playing time will be dictated mostly by his health. For the other three, though, it’s probably going to come down more to whom Craig Counsell most wants to see in the lineup on any given day. And, absent another injury in the next couple weeks, there’s probably going to be at least one odd man out, who has to operate almost exclusively off of the bench.
