Melania blindsided Trump on Epstein – and has made his life a whole lot worse

Melania is not like her husband. Donald Trump never shuts up; she almost never speaks. Whatever fascination we have with America’s First Lady is almost always driven by the combination of this and her demeanour – it invites us to speculate about what’s going on behind the icy façade.

When Melania breaks her silences, the statements she does make are often cryptic. It is hard to imagine her as a secret resistance liberal: during the public backlash to family separation at the border during her husband’s first term, Melania visited a detention facility wearing a coat emblazoned with “I really don’t care, do u?”

But equally, Melania often seems detached from Donald Trump, willing only to put in the bare minimum of polite decency in their rare public appearances together. Amazon’s otherwise shoddy documentary revealed one thing, if nothing else: Melania’s life is almost entirely separate from her husband’s. Almost everything else about her, especially her motivations, remains a mystery.

Even by her standards, though, Melania’s very public intervention on Thursday afternoon was on another scale. The Trump White House was already in the middle of a huge diplomatic blowback over its rapidly crumbling ceasefire deal with Iran, when Melania reignited the only story potentially even more damaging with her husband’s base: the Epstein files.

“I have never had any knowledge of Epstein’s abuse ‌of his victims,” she said as part of an extended on-camera statement. “I was never involved in any capacity. I was not a participant, was never on Epstein’s plane and never visited his private island.”

Amid other denials and a denunciation of “fake images and statements about Epstein and me”, Melania went on to take the side of Epstein’s victims – saying they should be given the chance to testify, in public if they wished, in front of Congress.

Its committees will now either have to give them that opportunity, or explain why they are defying the First Lady. Donald Trump himself will inevitably be asked whether he supports his wife’s call to Congress. The Epstein story had been almost entirely eclipsed by the Iran crisis. Melania has guaranteed that it will be back in the headlines for days and weeks to come.

Usually, a series of denials like Melania’s would come as an attempt to get ahead of a negative media story. The opening line of her statement certainly suggested that. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today.” But the odd thing is, no one has been talking about Melania and Epstein for weeks. At the time of writing, no media outlet has said it was working on a story about the issue.

This has seemed to come out of nowhere. It seems that Melania even blindsided her husband with her statement – a reporter managed to get hold of Donald Trump, and he said the White House had received no advance notice it was coming. Even experienced and well-sourced reporters covering the First Lady seem to have no idea why she spoke out.

Melania has previously been keen to kill certain rumours about her past associations with Epstein. The author Michael Wolff has claimed that Epstein told him that he introduced Donald and Melania, and even made the lurid claim that they first slept together on his plane. Melania once again angrily denied that was the case in this public statement, but went further still in denying she had ever been friends with either Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell, saying apparently friendly email exchanges were nothing more than “polite”.

Melania must surely know that a denial from a member of the Trump family will carry little weight in terms of ending the Epstein story. She might well be telling the truth on how she met her husband – Epstein himself was hardly a reliable narrator – but the contradictions elsewhere in her narrative are apparent.

She spoke of a few encounters at social functions in New York, but the most famous photographs of the two couples are at Mar-a-Lago, the Floridian social club owned by her husband. Emails between her and Ghislaine are in the public domain and are clearly more than just “polite”.

Donald Trump has issued denials on his friendship with Epstein that quickly proved to be false: he said there was no birthday message from him to Epstein, for example. We have now all had the chance to see it with our own eyes. The White House maintains it is fake.

The true nature of Melania’s relationship with Epstein and Maxwell remains a mystery, much like her reasons for giving this bizarre public address. But perhaps Melania herself set out a route to clearing that up.

She suggested in her statement that Epstein’s victims should be given a chance to testify to Congress under oath. Bill and Hillary Clinton recently did the same, over an extended period of hours, about their own history with Epstein. Maybe it would be best for everyone if Melania herself did the same? Without that, she’s only deepened the mystery.
